SGF’s comments on confab crude, rude, says Akinyemi
The National Conference organised by PresidentMuhammadu Buhari’s predecessor, Dr Goodluck Jonathan, in 2014 is now a subject of controversy between the Federal Government and its promoters-cum-participants.
Following comments by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), David Babachir Lawal reportedly describing the confab as ‘job for the boys,’ the Deputy Chairman of the summit, Professor Bolaji Akinyemi, chided the Federal Government for using what, according to him, was intemperate language.
Similarly, Jonathan, in response to an enquiry sent to his Twitter handle yesterday said there was no way the conference would have been a jamboree, especially as ‘respected eminent statesmen participated in it.' READ MORE
Tompolo asks military to return monarch’s golden sword
Wanted former militant leader Government Ekpemupolo alias Tompolo, yesterday wrote President Muhammadu Buhari, reminding him that the military authorities were yet to return the golden sword and symbol of authority of the Gbaramatu monarch the soldiers allegedly removed from the ruler’s palace when they invaded and occupied Oporoza town.
He also told the president that the innocent students and palace staff picked up by the troops on May 28, 2016, were yet to be released. But the Director of Defence Information (DDI) Brig-GenRabe Abubakar told The Guardian there cannot be anything further from the truth than the allegation that items were collected from a shrine. Ekweremadu writes UN, U.S., EU over forgery trial
Worried about the implications of the alleged forgery of Senate standing rules, Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, has written to the United Nations, European Union, United States’ Congress, European Union Parliament, governments of United States, United Kingdom and other foreign missions, alerting them of imminent threat to Nigeria’s democracy.
Ekweremadu raised the alarm over what he described as attempt to truncate Nigeria’s democracy and “silence him as the leader and highest ranking member of the opposition in the country, all in the name of prosecuting an alleged forgery case.”
In a two-page letter, titled: “Re: Trumped Up Charges Against the Presiding Officers of the 8th Senate: Nigerian Democracy is in Grave Danger,” Ekweremadu, attached copies of the court summons and other relevant documents relating to the matter. READ MORE

Naira depreciation: CBN resumes dollar sales to BDCs
The Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, is set to resume dollar sales to Bureaux de Change, BDCs, in a bid to arrest the continued depreciation of the Naira in the parallel foreign exchange market as well as reduce opportunity for round-tripping.
Vanguard investigations revealed that the CBN, yesterday, held a meeting with the leadership of Association of Bureau de Change Operators of Nigeria, ABCON, the umbrella body of BDCs in the country. READ MORE
Ekweremadu writes UN, US Congress, UK, EU, others; says Nigeria’s democracy in grave danger
Barely 24 hours after the arraignment of Senate President, Bukola Saraki; his deputy, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, and others for alleged forgery of 2015 Senate Standing Rules in an Abuja High Court, Ekweremadu has taken his case outside the shores of Nigeria.
He called for intervention of the United Nations, Us Congress, United Kingdom, European Union Parliament and foreign missions, saying a powerful institution as the National Assembly was being ridiculed and rubbished by PresidentMuhammadu Buhari’s government. READ MORE
N4.9BN FRAUD: Nenadi Usman, Fani-Kayode remanded in prison custody
Former Minister of Aviation and also a Director of Media and Publicity in the campaign organisation of former President Goodluck Jonathan, Femi Fani-Kayode, alongside former Minister of Finance, Nenandi Usman, were, yesterday, arraigned before a Federal High Court in Lagos, on a 17-count charge of money laundering to the tune of about N4.9 billion.
Also charged were Danjuma Yusuf and a company, Joint Trust Dimension Nig. Ltd. They all pleaded not guilty to the 17-count charge of unlawful retention, unlawful use and payment of money to the tune of about N4.9 billion brought against them by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC. After the charge was read to them and their plea taken, the prosecutor, Mr Rotimi Oyedepo, prayed the court for a trial date, adding that he was prepared to proceed with trial. READ MORE

Nigeria’s sovereignty is negotiable, says Soyinka
Nobel laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka, has lent his voice to the growing calls for the restructuring of the Nigerian federation, saying the sovereignty of the nation is negotiable.
Speaking during a visit to PUNCH Place, the corporate headquarters of PUNCH Nigeria Limited, Kilometre 14, Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, Ogun State, on Tuesday, Soyinka said decentralisation of the nation would ensure healthy rivalry among the component units.
The laureate said it was wrong for previous administrations in the country to say that Nigeria’s sovereignty was non-negotiable, submitting that the position was antithetical to development. READ MORE
28 dead in Istanbul airport suicide attack
At least 28 people have been killed in a triple suicide attack at Istanbul’s Ataturk international airport, the city’s governor said late Tuesday.
“Three suicide bombers carried out an attack. Twenty-eight people have lost their lives. There are also 60 people injured,” Vasip Sahin told journalists. READ MORE
Dasuki said I should give Jonathan’s cousin $40m – Witness
The trial of Azibaola Robert, a cousin to former President Goodluck Jonathan began on Tuesday, with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, presenting its first witness, Ibrahim Mahe who gave account of how he transferred $40m to ‘One Plus Holdings Nigeria Limited’, a company owned by Robert.
Azibaola and his wife, Stella, are standing trial before Justice Nnamdi O. Dimgba of the Federal High Court sitting in Maitama, Abuja, for seven counts bordering on money laundering, criminal breach of trust and corruption.
Mahe, a retired permanent secretary, special services in the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, while being led in evidence by counsel for the EFCC, Sylvanus Tahir, told the court that he did not know Azibaola and Stella personally but knew ‘One Plus Holdings’ through a transaction. $1.5m Dubai assets: DHQ to decide Army chief’s fate
The Presidency has left the Defence Headquarters (DHQ) to determine Chief of Army Staff Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai’s fate, following the outcry over his $1.5 million Dubai property.
PRNigeria, the military under-cover media machinery, yesterday said the government investigated and cleared Lt.-Gen. Buratai over his assets.
Although the platform was silent on whether it was the Ministry of Defence or the DHQ that cleared Gen. Buratai, it said the nature of his offshore investments was based on capital market principles of shareholding.
Gen. Buratai has been under attack for allegedly buying two property in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). READ MORE
Court won’t defreeze Fayose’s account
A Federal High Court in Ado-Ekiti yesterday declined Governor Ayo Fayose’s bid to de-freeze his account frozen by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
Justice Taiwo Taiwo ordered the EFCC and Zenith Bank, the first and second defendants, to show cause on July 4 why the order being sought by Governor Fayose should be refused.
He held that the order being sought by the plaintiff (Fayose) was a mandatory one, hence the defendants must be heard before the order is given.
Justice Taiwo said he understood that Fayose enjoyed immunity and that the court could adjudicate on the matter as canvassed by his counsel, Mike Ozekhome, but held that the relief he sought was a mandatory order of the court.READ MORE
Sheriff camp picks Cairo Ojougboh as deputy chair
Factional National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Ali Modu Sheriffhas appointed the party’s former Vice Chairman (South-South), Dr. Cairo Ojougboh as the faction’s Deputy National Chairman.
This is coming just as another set of “chairmen” of state chapters yesterday endorsed Alhaji Ali Modu Sheriff as the party’s “authentic” National Chairman.
Ojougboh was one of the party’s mainstream national officials that were removed at the party’s May 21 botched convention in Port Harvourt.READ MORE
