Anytime there is a recession, it is believed that there is less money in circulation. Business is slowing down and customers are not buying as much as they used to. This is the reality of many businesses. The disposable income of most individuals has gone down. Instead of spending more to stimulate growth, most businesses are cutting costs.

Nigerian Churches And The Problem of ‘Baby Factories’ By Abimbola Adelakun

This year alone, I have heard up to six accounts of women who had been arrested by the police for buying a child at a baby factory. Each time the Police broke up a baby factory, they traced prior buyers and found these women. One thread that ran through each of the stories was that the women had claimed to have delivered a “miracle baby” and had shared a testimony either in church or before a church audience. In some instances, people had suspected that the women did not look like they had been through parturition but had chosen to look away for reasons embedded in our cultural ideas of morality and the kind of sentiments they breed. A child that would have ended up in a foster home had found a mother, and for it was a win-win situation. With that kind of attitude, which I think is general, the problem of baby factories will not go away.

I Don’t Mess Around With Women — Majid Michel

Ghanaian actor Majid Michel’s experience on the set of his first epic movie, Ayamma, which was shot recently somewhere in Akwa Ibom State, has left a sweet-sour taste in his mouth.
The actor, in an interview with our correspondent in Lagos, described the experience as very challenging. He said, “Leaving home to a very distant land to shoot a movie in a forest full of insects and darkness was quite challenging for me. We didn’t put on tops while the shooting lasted. Even if we did, it still would not have prevented all kinds of insects — not just mosquitoes — from biting our faces, bare feet and hands.”

Ondo Election: Jimoh Ibrahim is the Man from PDP

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC yesterday evening named Mr. Jimoh Ibrahim as the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party for the November 26 governorship election in Ondo State. Mr. Alabi Ebenezer Omotayo was named as his running mate.

Immediately the names were forwarded, the camp of the factional National Chairman of the party, Senator Modu Sheriff, into wild jubilation. However, that was not made to be in the camp of Senator Ahmed Makarfi as their candidate, Mr Jegede no longer has a chance.

Until the commission released the final list of all the candidates that would contest the election, the name of Jegede was put on its website as the candidate of the PDP.

In a letter sent to the Ondo State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Mr. Segun Agbaje, the commission described the list as FINAL. So now you have it, Jimoh Ibrahim is PDP’s candidate for the Ondo State Governorship election.

As the Dollar Sells for N500… By Bade Adebolu

An objective evaluation and analysis of Nigeria’s economic collapse points directly to President Muhammadu Buhari and his unprecedented inaction and monumental blunder in failing to appoint his ministers and form a government until 6 months after he was sworn into office. Furthermore, the delay in having a budget passed is also another factor. To cap it up, the appointment of a seeming mediocre minister to head the finance ministry can only explain why the dollar has gotten to the Guinness Book of Records’ all-time-low in the country’s entire history. Can Buhari explain why it took him over 10 months to have a budget in place?

The IMF’s World Economic Outlook for October projects Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product at $415.08bn, well ahead of South Africa’s GDP which was put at $280.36. It will be recalled that following a drastic fall in the value of the naira on the back of the removal of the peg to the dollar by the Central Bank of Nigeria, South Africa was reported, sometime in August this year, to have upstaged Nigeria as the biggest economy in Africa.
