Remembering Nigeria’s First Military Coup, By Jibrin Ibrahim
At that time, the military had a good reputation. Following the publication of Samuel Huntington’s book “The Soldier and the State” in 1957, the political science establishment in the United States and Europe had been pushing the idea of the military as the most modern, disciplined and organised institution in Africa that could play the modernising role the Turkish military had played.
“Anybody who headed a military regime subverted the wishes of the people… We all subverted the wishes of the people.” – General Ibrahim Babangida (Tell magazine, 7/12/98)

Nigeria is God’s project By Fola Ojo

Many years ago, an Egyptian businessman once lived and did business in Nigeria. His story is one of the many that gladdens my heart each time I seek locum tenens in hope and excitement against frequent angst and anger many of us express about Nigeria.
The Egyptian, who doubled as an adjunct university professor, was teaching a business class in a US Midwestern state university. On the last day of class, he recounted how he became successful; and what he had learnt over the years in the business world. Two Nigerian students who had been in the class never knew this part of his story until now.

Forty-Five Power Sector Prophecies In 2017, By Odion Omonfoman
Share on Digg
Electricity customers should pray against further devaluation of the naira. Customers should pray violently against the floating spirit of the naira.
It’s the start of another new year. And as usual, “prophets” are dishing out all sorts of prophecies – from the mundane to the ridiculous, in very, very vague language. Luckily for me, I’ve seen a niche area. None of the prophets have seen what would happen in the power sector in 2017, thus I have chosen to look at my crystal ball and dish out top prophecies in the sector for 2017. In keeping to the format of Nigerian prophecies, mine will also be vague, leaving the reader to decipher its meaning or interpretation. You are pardoned if these prophecies seem more like predictions, projections and/or a wish list in the power sector.
NIGERIA: A NATION SO BLESSED, BUT SO CURSED By Olalekan Waheed ADIGUN
It is New Year again. As usual, many Christians went to Church on New Year Eve to receive prophesies for the incoming year about what it may bring. There were prophesies like “APC will face crisis”; “A new party will be formed by politician”; “A popular politician will signal his intention to run for the presidency in 2019” etcetera which drive many Nigerians to great excitement. Not all these “prophesy” are entirely negative or clownish as some of the above appear to be. Some prophesies deal with the future greatness of Nigeria and the fact that it will be blessed with good leaders. The excitements and the mad rush to hear these statements show how religious many people are!

Foreign Investors or Tourists?, By ‘Tope Fasua
…I personally will not set store on foreign investors taking a country like ours out of the socioeconomic woods we find ourselves. For the Portfolio investors who love to play in our capital markets, we have seen how they played that market twice in eight years and always cashed out leaving us locals with the short end of the stick.
The question is: Which of these should Nigeria be spending time and resources looking for – foreign investors or tourists? The foreign investor has been getting so much airtime in Nigeria for as long as I can remember. Each time they are mentioned – and that is too many times than necessary in my view – they conjure the image of either Europeans or Americans flying into Nigeria with briefcases full of dollars. In my head, they conjure the image of benevolent Chinese men who are looking for how to ‘help’ Nigeria. Nigerian governments – at the national and subnational levels – have spent so much resources looking for these foreign investors. In time, we tried to emphasise ‘direct’ investments i.e. those types which go into the construction of factories and whatnot. But in the absence of that, owing to their snail speed in coming, of late Nigerians have been begging for ‘portfolio’ investors to come too. We need the dollars any which way, I’ve been told.
