Texas floodwaters claim five soldiers' lives at Fort Hood

A U.S. Army truck overturned in a swollen Fort Hood creek on Thursday, killing five soldiers and leaving four missing as storms dumped more rain on flood-hit parts of Texas.

The rising floodwaters in Texas scrambled transportation, further swelled rivers already over their banks and sent more people to evacuation shelters.

The U.S. Army said the truck overturned at Fort Hood's Owl Creek low-water crossing during a training exercise. Three bodies were recovered downstream, the Army said. It is unclear where the bodies of the additional two soldiers were found.

Clinton attacks Trump’s foreign policy as a threat to U.S. safety

U.S. Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton lambasted Donald Trump’s foreign policy platform as “dangerously incoherent” in a speech on Thursday that cast her Republican rival as both a frightening and laughable figure.

In remarks that at times resembled a comedy roast, Clinton unleashed a torrent of polished zingers and one-liners to attack Trump’s policies and character, suggesting Trump might start a nuclear war if elected to the White House simply because “somebody got under his very thin skin.”

“Donald Trump’s ideas are not just different, they are dangerously incoherent,” she said to a room of supporters in San Diego, California. “They’re not even really ideas, just a series of bizarre rants, personal feuds and outright lies.”

Some officials worry about briefing Trump, fearing spilled secrets

Some U.S. intelligence officials are concerned that Donald Trump’s “shoot from the hip” style could pose national security risks as they prepare to give him a routine pre-election briefing once he is formally anointed as the Republican presidential nominee.

Eight senior security officials told Reuters they had concerns over briefing Trump, whose brash, unpredictable campaign style has been a feature of his rise as an insurgent candidate. Despite their worries, the officials said the “Top Secret” briefing to each candidate would not deviate from the usual format to avoid any appearance of bias.

Most of the officials asked for anonymity to discuss a domestic political issue.

Current and former officials said that the scandal over Hillary Clinton’s use of emails also raises concerns about her handling of sensitive information. The likely Democratic nominee is facing an FBI probe into whether security was compromised and laws were broken by her use of a private email server for government business while she was Secretary of State.

San Jose protesters attack Trump supporters with punches, eggs …

A group of protesters attacked Donald Trump supporters who were leaving the candidate’s rally in San Jose on Thursday night. A dozen or more people were punched, at least one person was pelted with an egg and Trump hats grabbed from supporters were set on fire on the ground.

Police stood their ground at first but after about 90 minutes moved into the remaining crowd to break it up and make arrests. At least four people were taken into custody, though police didn’t release total arrest figures Thursday night. One officer was assaulted, police Sgt. Enrique Garcia said.

There were no immediate reports of injuries and no major property damage, police said.

The crowd, which had numbered over 300 just after the rally, had thinned significantly but those that remained, filling about a city block near the San Jose Convention Center, were rowdy and angry.

Some banged on the cars of Trump supporters as they left the rally and chased after those on foot to frighten them.

Senate summons NEITI boss over unremitted N1tn revenue

The Senate on Thursday summoned the Executive Secretary of the Nigeria Extractive Industry Transparency Initiative, Mr. Waziri Adio, to appear before it in plenary and explain the details of the agency’s 2013 report.

The NEITI 2013 report, according to Waziri while submitting a copy of the document to the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, on Tuesday, contained stunning revelation of over N1trn oil revenue allegedly not remitted to the federation account between 2005 and 2013 by the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation.

The motion requesting the debate on the report at senate-in-plenary was moved on Thursday by the senator representing Zamfara North Senatorial District, Tijjani Kaura, urging  the Senate to urgently look into the report.

Yahaya noted that the report of financial activities in Nigeria’s oil and gas industry showed that the nation made $58.07bn from hydrocarbon in 2013.

Reps back military action against N’D Avengers

The House of Representatives said on Thursday that it was in support of any action taken so far by the Federal Government to contain the rising attacks on oil pipelines in the Niger Delta by the Niger Delta Avengers.

Attacks on oil installations lately have reportedly resulted in a drop of daily crude oil production output from 2.2 million barrels to less than 1.5mbpd.

The government responded to the development by deploying soldiers in the Niger Delta creeks in a bid to quell the attacks.

Speaking on the development at the National Assembly on Thursday, the Chairman, House Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Mr. Abdulrazak Namdas, said the House was in support of the government’s actions.

Again, Buhari Fails To Publish Details Of Looters, Recovered Assets

President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday failed to publish details of recovered loot and culpable individuals as he promised he would during his nationwide broadcast on May 29.

Thursday’s failure made it the second time Mr. Buhari would renege on a promise he boldly made to Nigerians.

Mr. Buhari had on May 14 said in London that he would personally provide specific details of all recovered stolen public funds when he addressed Nigerians on Democracy Day and his first year in office, adding that he believed that what Nigerians were being fed through the media were not detailed enough.

FG scraps post UTME

The Federal Government Thursday scrapped the conduct of post Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations (UTME) for candidates seeking admission into higher institution.

The government explained that all tertiary institutions were at liberty to conduct screening for candidates seeking admission into any school.

Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu, said this on Thursday in Abuja after declaring open the 2016 Combined Policy Meeting on Admissions to Universities, Polytechnics and other higher institutions in Nigeria.

Adamu, expressed confidence in the examination conducted by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), adding that there was no need for other examination to be conducted by universities after JAMB.

Osinbajo Flags Off Ogoni Cleanup After Buhari Cancelled Trip

President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday backed off a proposed trip to Rivers State for the kick-off of the cleanup of Ogoni, delegating Vice President Yemi Osinbajo for the exercise.

The president cancelled the event even after his advanced team had already arrived Ogoni.

The presidency has yet not given any reason for the last-minute cancellation of the trip, which was the second time in less than two weeks that Mr. Buhari would cancel a scheduled event outside Abuja.

Saraki’s trial at CCT resumes Tuesday

Senate President Bukola Saraki’s trial before the Code of conduct Tribunal (CCT) will resume on Tuesday.

Dr. Saraki is standing trial on a 16-count charge of alleged false asset declaration.

The tribunal on Wednesday adjourned following a request by the prosecution counsel to adjourn to allow its key witness, Micheal Wetkas, attend to another matter at the Federal High Court.

The CCT, in statement by its head of press and public relation, Ibraheem Al-hassan, said the trails will continue between June 7 and 9.

Police shortlist 338,227 applicants

The Police Service Commission (PSC) yesterday said it shortlisted 338,227 applicants of the 911,438 that applied for recruitment into the Police Force.

The Chairman of the Commission, Mr Mike Okiro, at a news conference in Abuja, said screening of successful applicants would begin on Monday in the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

Okiro explained that 44,661 were shortlisted for cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) , 87,736 for cadet Inspector and 205,830 for Police Constables.

He said “I would like to emphasise that the initial shortlisting of applicants was done electronically. Invitation letters were also sent to successful applicants through SMS and to their personal email addresses.”

Facebook Inc’s board has proposed removing Mark Zuckerberg’s majority voting control in the event of the social media giant’s chief executive and founder deciding to exit management at some point in future.

In a proxy filing on Thursday with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, Facebook’s board said it will ask shareholders to vote on a proposal that would convert Zuckerberg’s Class B shares into Class A shares if he is no longer in a leadership position.

As of June 2, Zuckerberg beneficially owned about 4 million Class A shares and about 419 million Class B shares, collectively representing about 53.8 percent of total outstanding voting power and 14.8 percent of total outstanding economic interests.

Paul Ryan, the top elected Republican, ended a long period of soul-searching and endorsed Donald Trump for president on Thursday, a step toward unifying party loyalists behind the insurgent candidate despite concerns about his candidacy.

Ryan had been a high-profile holdout to supporting Trump for the Nov. 8 presidential election out of concern about the presumptive Republican nominee’s bellicose rhetoric and break with party orthodoxy on issues including trade and immigration.

The House of Representatives speaker announced his support in a column for the Janesville Gazette newspaper in his home state of Wisconsin. It surfaced in the middle of a speech by Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton in which she launched a far-reaching attack on Trump’s foreign policy credentials.

Buhari Cancels Trip To Rivers For Ogoni Cleanup

The planned trip of President Muhammadu Buhari to Rivers State to launch the cleanup of Ogoni land, polluted by years of oil exploration and production, has been cancelled.

Multiple sources at the presidential villa told PREMIUM TIMES on Thursday that the president had not left the State House for the trip.

“Femi Adesina will issue a statement shortly,” a source who declined to be identified because he was not permitted to talk to the media, said, referring to one of the president’s spokespersons.

The shortest verse in the King James Version of the Bible states “Jesus Wept.” The terseness of this verse gives it impetus; driving scholars to inquire the text for deeper and complex meaning such an emotional moment might be signifying. The verse spawns multiple possible interpretations, some contrived and others far-fetched. From trying to “humanise” the Son of God to thinking Lazarus’s prefigured that of Jesus himself, the bottomline was that Jesus was overcome by emotions and he let it out. In short, public display of human feelings, especially by a public figure, necessarily invites interpretation.

It is in this light I read the latest article on President Muhammadu Buhari by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina, entitled, “Buhari: Beyond the Iron and Steel.”
