A hard knock for GTB…..and the banks by Abimbola Akinkugbe

gtb
On Sunday I saw the GTBank advert for their upcoming food fair in the papers and I saw red. I decided to wait a few days before writing to be sure my emotions are reigned in.
I still feel the same way though….
I like GTBank architecture, they encourage professionals in the construction industry. They allow creative expression in the design of their branches. I like their internet banking platform as well. It has greatly reduced the amount of interface I need to have with their mostly impolite and untrained branch staff. So this is nothing personal. What is right is just right and what is wrong is just wrong.
Pray what is the business of a bank organizing a food fair that has already been staged by a Nigerian enterprenuer? If they were sponsoring another entrepreneur it would be fine(competition is good for the consumer), but by themselves? That is how they are now promoting the Autism awareness that they enabled one of their customers to do in the past.
When are Nigerian banks going to understand that their business is to help build the economy by building and encouraging businesses.

Courts on both U.S. coasts dealt setbacks to Bill Cosby’s legal team on Tuesday, as the comedian kept trying to fend off lawsuits over allegations that he has sexually abused women for decades.
A California judge, in a ruling made public on Tuesday, refused Cosby’s second attempt to dismiss a lawsuit brought by a woman who accused the entertainer of sexually abusing her when she was 15 at the Playboy Mansion in Los Angeles.
In New York, a federal judge ruled against Cosby’s effort to compel the publisher of New York magazine to provide access to unedited interviews of six women who are suing him over separate abuse allegations.
Representatives for Cosby declined to comment.

He explained that the when constructed would drastically reduce traffic volume on Eko, Cater and Third Mainland Bridges.

Bukola Saraki: Aristocratically-Spoilt Child Trying Hard To Dare Buhari! By Frisky Larr

Saraki-Buhari
“Serves Buhari right” one may be tempted to say and many are saying it loudly too, albeit for different reasons. One of such reasons appealed to me to a limited extent and it reflects the inherent culture of contradictions in ordinary Nigerians. In a brief trip through memory lane, I recall the verbal missiles of hate that flew the ways of former President Olusegun Obasanjo during the second half of his presidency. I recall how much of an object of hate he was in a very large section of the intellectual community, with some persisting till the very moment.

A couple of years ago, Nigerian economy was growing at between 6-7%, GDP rate. This was probably due to the fact that crude oil/gas, the main export earner, attracting 90% of foreign exchange, FX income and which constitutes about 11-14% of her GDP, was trading at over $100 per barrel according to data from the Economist magazine.
The most probable reason is that the oil boom and Nigeria’s forex reserve  which at one point was estimated at about $60 billion attracted international portfolio and equity investors who came in droves to buy Nigerian bonds/ treasury which had a mouth watering yield of about 12% – an impossibility in the industrialized world.

Increasing crude prices will cause more problems By Henry Boyo

Oil tank
Crude oil prices wobbled alarmingly, well below Nigeria’s modest budget benchmark of $38/barrel for several weeks, but, unexpectedly flexed above $40 in early April to rekindle hopes that the fortuitous price spiral will be sustained to partly fund the N2tn plus 2016 projected deficit and to partially also satisfy the clearly bloated excess market demand for foreign exchange.
Thus, if by some “strange turn”, oil prices further bounce back beyond, for example, $60/barrel this year, the almost $5bn projected external loan in the 2016 budget will become unnecessary. Consequently, further debt accumulation which already cost us an arm and a leg to service, will also become restrained.

The Last African Investor Adding Value

“As an entrepreneur, nothing gives me more pleasure than the opportunity to give back to the community” – Aliko Dangote at the 38th Pre-Convocation Lecture ABU, Zaria January 29, 2016
Sunday April 10, 2016 was the birthday of the President/Chief Executive of the Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote. The richest man in Africa is certainly not short of best wishes as a budding sexagenarian. But before I could add mine to the bagful, the last African investor standing up to re-industrialise the continent lived up to expectation with a birthday manifestation of value addition and beneficiation for the continent. Yours comradely was among the invitees to the “special double events”, groundbreaking ceremony of $1billion Dangote Cement PLC’s 6MMTPA plant at Okpella, Edo State and celebration of Aliko’s birthday.

Between banks and looters ……. NATION

Nigerian-Banks-e1454246321456
We wager that until the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, designs a more methodical approach to banking supervision, the country will continue to lose funds to public officials who are keen to dip their hands into public treasury. The manner huge sums of money amounting to billions of naira are reportedly spirited away by officials who are charged with the common wealth is evidence that the apex bank must tighten the noose on the deposit money banks under its watch.
