Awujale Reveals Why He Fell Out With Obasanjo

The Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Adetona, said that he fell out with former President Olusegun Obasanjo when the latter failed to address the issue of true federalism in the country as president.
The Awujale said though Obasanjo had promised to address the issue of true federalism before the 1999 elections, but on getting to office, he did otherwise.
He said, “With Obasanjo finally settled in office, I went to see him at Aso Rock in Abuja. I sought to meet with him so that we could discuss the contentious issue of true federalism in the nation and the future association of the constituents. He had

Aisha Buhari denies fleecing Nigerian Commission in UK

Wife of the President, Mrs. Aisha Buhari, on Friday said there was no truth in a media report accusing her of colluding with some government officials to fleece the Nigerian High Commission in London every time she travels to the United Kingdom.
She challenged the authors of the report or any member of the staff of the High Commission to provide concrete evidence to contradict her position as it concerns her trips to London, even if not for her reputation, but that Nigerians deserved to know the truth at all times.

Vital Disclosures In A Relationship

If you realise that the truth has a way of surfacing (no matter how long it takes)…then you will make the efforts to ‘come as you are’ in your relationships…no matter how unsure you are. If it’s meant to be… ‘coming as you are’ won’t change a thing. And if it’s not meant to be…all the manipulations in this world won’t hold it together. Besides, none should really be judged, as we don’t have much control over certain issues of our lives.
Make up your mind to start on an honest slate-with whoever. If he/she doesn’t want you…someone else will!

Can You Use Your Child’s School Fees To Pay Your In-Law’s Hospital Bill?

According to the Nigerian culture, one’s in-laws are more or less like one’s family members; hence, it is often expected that one should do for an in-law what one can do for one’s family member. Accepting this notion could, however, be difficult sometimes. For instance, can you use your child’s school fees to pay your in-law’s hospital bill? SATURDAY PUNCH has the answers of some Nigerians
I can if the in-law is a good person
Ifejowo Adeshina
Yes, I can do it, but it is on one condition — the in-law must really be a very good person. I could call my children’s school that they should have patience with me concerning the school fees and I am very sure that they would because they wouldn’t be ready to lose any pupil in their school, especially if I have never owed them before. I’m sure they would understand.

SINGING AROUND THE THRONE

Then I looked and heard the voice of many angels. They encircled the throne and … in a loud voice sang. Revelation 5:11-12a, NIV

Singing to God is not limited to humankind; it is the full-time work of angels in heaven. Human beings offer praises through songs to God as an act of worship and in preparation for joining the eternal choir of heaven. But the angelic hosts sing to God

Nigeria is God’s project By Fola Ojo

Many years ago, an Egyptian businessman once lived and did business in Nigeria. His story is one of the many that gladdens my heart each time I seek locum tenens in hope and excitement against frequent angst and anger many of us express about Nigeria.
The Egyptian, who doubled as an adjunct university professor, was teaching a business class in a US Midwestern state university. On the last day of class, he recounted how he became successful; and what he had learnt over the years in the business world. Two Nigerian students who had been in the class never knew this part of his story until now.

2017: Can We Turn The Tables On Adversity? By Ayo Olukotun

To restate Falana’s insight is to recall that someone’s “worst year ever” as 2016 is commonly described, was another man’s platform for achieving economic turnaround. More generally, recession however dire, contains at the borders opportunities for some to reap large dividends while, of course, throwing the majority into a worsening misery.

Will Reduction of Import Duties On 115 Items Improve Economy? | Punch

The reduction will improve the economy because the items are sources of raw materials for industries. And since the government has promised that they want Nigeria to be industrialised, policies should be directed to help local production of goods and services. Most of the industries have no raw materials and if the manufacturers are fighting the same way as the finished goods that are being brought into the economy, it will not help local manufacturers. If imported goods are 10 per cent and raw materials are 10 per cent, how will manufacturers break even? There is no way.

A milestone in the quest for victory over Boko Haram insurgents was recorded on December 22, when the Army captured “Camp Zero,” the sect’s fortress located in the heart of Sambisa Forest, in Borno State. The place has been their base since 2013 when they were dislodged from Maiduguri. More remarkably, the 219 Chibok schoolgirls are believed to have been hidden there since their abduction in 2014.

Obasanjo Vs Awujale: A Delayed Showdown, By Azu Ishiekwene

“Awujale” is one of the most forthright accounts of the personal odysseys of a traditional ruler who through longevity and other circumstances of life has earned immortality.
The book is nearly seven years in print but I didn’t get a hold of it until sometime last year. Someone very close, whom I had told I wanted to interview Kabiyesi Oba Sikiru Adetona, had sent a copy over to me in Abuja. He advised me to read the book before the interview.

GTBank’s Faux Pas and the Question of a Customer Service Culture, By Simbo Olorunfemi

Between Marks & Spencer and our GTBank, is this simply a difference in brand culture, customer service orientation or a reflection of how corporates here treat Nigerians as opposed to how people/corporates in other parts of the world treat their customers? Not for the Bank the thought of saving face…
I had bought some items from Marks & Spencer in London with arrangement made for home delivery. For some reason, M & S had an issue meeting up with the schedule and called instead to alert me on the day they were supposed to deliver that delivery would be on Monday rather than the Friday I had been assured of, at the time of

OBJ Vs Adenuga: A Memory, By Louis Odion

The following, an abridgement of a two-part series entitled “Michael Ishola Adenuga” and “Of War, Stray Bullets & P.O.Ws” first published 11 years ago (2006) by Sunday Sun, is rerun today with a view to offering readers some illumination to better dissect the epistolary grenade hurled on Wednesday by former President Olusegun Obasanjo against Oba Sikuri Adetona of Ijebuland over the latter’s claims in an autobiography, “Awujale”.
Though isolated by space, a correlation of irony is easy to decipher at two events in Brussels and Lagos in July 2006. In a landmark pronouncement, the European Union fined Microsoft a whopping $357 million for its refusal to obey an anti-trust ruling, thus opening yet another epic chapter in international jurisprudence.

Southern Kaduna

There are people that are sending a message, defend yourselves. We will get them. Defend yourself is hate speech. You can’t defend yourself if there is a government. We are going to arrest and prosecute all those that pass that message”. This widely publicised and yet to be disclaimed statement has been credited to the Kaduna State Governor, Mallam Nasir el-Rufai, apparently reacting to the multiple calls by leaders and spokesmen of the indigenous, largely Christian, communities of the Southern region of the state to defend themselves against the persistent attacks of suspected Fulani herdsmen. The attacks had led to the sacking and razing of entire villages, gruesome murder of hundreds of innocent citizens and large-scale destruction of property.

Relationship Tips: How to deal with a possessive partner

Every relationship is healthy with a bit of possessiveness, you know that feeling that someone loves and desires you makes you feel like a king or queen in your little world.

But it becomes sickening when it becomes too much like your partner wants to know your whereabouts every second of the day, who you speak or relate with and makes you feel controlled.
Over possessiveness could be as a result of insecurity and low –self -esteem sometimes due to past relationships or childhood experiences when one parent had an extra marital affair. Today we will discuss ways to manage this situation, they are:
  1. Communication: Communicating your feelings to your partner is a good way to solve this problem. Sometimes a simple “I love you “ or a simple compliment about what you love about your partner and be specific about it can do the magic

Brides: To rent a wedding gown: good or bad move?

Weddings are beautiful affairs, of course, but they never come cheap.

What typifies this mostly is the price people pay to get wedding gowns. The best wedding gowns and even some that are only just above average are often sold at crazy prices. [Remember, there's an ongoing recession in Nigeria at the time of this story]
The simple fact is that many people look for how to have the best weddings while spending as little as they can.

Fayose Fantasia

Hardball has struck bull’s eye here even if he says so himself. There cannot be a better description of Governor Ayo Fayose’s running farcical theatre than fantasia. This phenomenon is defined as an unstructured orchestral composition or any unstructured work at that. And as we all know, the second time governor of Ekiti State has made an art of no structure. In fact anything structured seems like an anathema to him.

Psychiatric test for politicians…..THE GUARDIAN

james-ibori
As Nigerians begin the New Year grappling with recession, the suggestion made by a former Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mrs. Farida Waziri, that the Federal Government should ensure that all politicians undertake psychiatric test before occupying any office, is very long overdue for adoption. It is an audacious proposal which, if considered and acted upon, would help prevent crimes in high places and improve the moral quality of politicians.Mrs. Waziri gave her recommendation in Abuja, the other day while delivering a speech at the inauguration of the Nigerian Women Against Corruption project, organised by the EFCC and the wife of the president, Aisha Buhari. Citing examples of megalomania, unjustified treasure-looting and obsessive accumulation of needless property at home and abroad from current experience of Nigerian politicians, she reiterated the proposal she made over seven years ago when she was head of the EFCC, to drive home the urgency of psychiatric test for politicians.

Will Ban On Vehicle Importation Through Land Borders Help Economy?

In my view, the ban will not help the economy. What I actually thought the government should have done before taking such an action is to reduce tariff on cars brought into the country through the ports. It is high tariff that encouraged people to bring in cars through land borders.
In neighbouring Benin Republic, Cotonou to be precise, irrespective of the vehicle you are bringing in, the duty is the same. Importers bringing in vehicles through Benin Republic pay all the charges – cost of clearing and customs duty without hassle; but the story is different when it comes to Nigeria. Most of the vehicles which come in don’t pay duty to government, largely because of the systemic problems we are facing.
