Hillary Clinton: FBI interviews Democratic Presidential candidate in private server probe

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI)interviewed Democratic U.S. presidential candidate Hillary Clinton for three and a half hours on Saturday as part of the probe into her use of a private email server while serving as secretary of state, her campaign said.
The interview at FBI headquarters in Washington followed a week of intense public focus on the investigation and on Clinton's viability as a presidential candidate, which her campaign has tried for months to downplay as a distraction.

Uche Ogah: Governor elect slams Abia Chief Judge for refusing to swear him in

The Governor elect of Abia state, Uche Ogah has slammed the Chief Judge, Theresa Uzoukwu for refusing to swear him in.

Reports say Uzoukwu went into hiding following pressures from different quarters to swear in Ogah.
The Governor was issued a certificate of return by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), following a court ruling ordering Governor Okezie Ikpeazu to vacate office.
Ogah said the refusal of the state Chief Judge to swear him in, is an insult on the rule of law, adding that her action was capable of causing instability in Abia.

Their years of innocence By Muyiwa Adetiba

Rauf-Aregbesola
I understand Mr Rauf Aregbesola, the Osun State Governor is Ijesha. I don’t know if he spent his early years in Ilesha like I did. I also don’t know if he attended any primary school in Ilesha like I did. If he did neither, then I can proudly tell him that mine was a beautiful experience. My school was what we called an ‘Awolowo School’ in those days which meant education was largely free. It was the main school in its catchment area which also meant that all eligible children irrespective of parentage—rich or poor, educated or illiterate, Christian, Muslim or Pagan—made a bee-hive for the school at enrolment time. Aregbosola My school was blind to all kinds of discrimination, or anything that made anyone stand out. The school uniform was Khaki on khaki; no shoes and no belt. I don’t know if the last two were proscribed but I can’t remember anybody wearing them. Break time provided us with a free meal so that nobody resumed from break hungry.

Pope Francis and the gay question

pope
He is a man of God after my heart even though I am no adherent of the Roman Catholic Faith. Pope Francis’ unassuming simplicity, quiet dignity and unobtrusive asceticism make him such a Christ-like figure. On his stepping into the shoes of the fisherman, St Peter, regarded by Catholics as the first pope, he chose to be named after St Francis of Assisi. That decision sent a signal that this would be a Pope committed to the welfare and wellbeing of the teeming wretched of this earth. For, St Francis of Assisi dedicated his life identifying with the poor and underprivileged of this world while himself shunning any form of worldly comfort.  Some christened the new head of the Roman Catholic Church as the ‘Pope of hope’.

Now, they bear our cross… By Yomi Odunuga

saraki
Quite honestly, I truly understand some senators’ riotous hysteria over what they consider sacrilegious charges brought against Senate President Bukola Saraki and his deputy, Ike Ekweremadu at an Abuja High Court. In a society where quotidian living is solely dictated by a visibly unwritten code of placing self-aggrandisement above every social or moral ethos, who would not? It would have been preposterous to expect these aggrieved lawmakers to maintain cold silence in the face of the grievous harm that could be inflicted on their pot of soup. We do not expect them to surrender their means of livelihood to brutal attacks by external forces, which the executive represents in this particular matter. For, if we must vomit the truth, Saraki and Ekweremadu hold the key to a further expansion of the personal wealth of these persons and there is no sense in recondite pretences about it. That is where those who question attempts to frustrate the trial miss the point. To the ordinary eye, it is a simple case of forgery that should be left to the court to determine. To those conversant with the amazing twists and turns in Nigeria’s chequered political history, it could deal a deadly blow on the fortunes of the co-conspirators who by no means came into power via the most devious coup in the history of parliamentary leadership in Nigeria.

You can resist an invading army; you cannot resist an idea whose time has come – Victor Hugo
This is one of the most frequently used versions of the powerful musing of a French poet, novelist and dramatist of the Romantic movement, Victor Marie Hugo. He is considered one of the greatest and best-known French writers. The big man died since May 22, 1885 in Paris, France. Hugo’s evergreen quote on an “idea whose time has come”, has been variously cited by non-French speaking writers. The two other versions that are popular in the art journals are equally instructive. They are: Nothing is more powerful than an idea whose time has come. All the forces in the world are not so powerful as an idea whose time has come.

Five Ways Brexit Could Affect You, By Azu Ishiekwene

Former French president, General Charles De Gaulle, must be smiling mockingly in his grave. Twice between 1961 and 1969, he opposed British membership of what was then the European Economic Commission for two reasons.
One, he argued that the British did not see themselves as “Europeans” and, two, he wanted to maintain French hegemony as the “Third Force” to the US and Soviet blocs at the height of the Cold War.
Out of resentment, Britain led six other European countries to form the rival European Free Trade Association. When the association collapsed, even before taking off, Britain tried to join the French-led EEC. De Gaulle vetoed the request twice, but it passed after his death.

TODAY, I am proud to feature in my column my friend Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede, a man with a coat of many colours: a lawyer turned banker, the President of the Nigerian Stock Exchange, the Chairman of Coronation Capital Limited and the outgoing Chairman of FMDQ OTC board.
His legendary friendship with Herbert Wigwe has often been compared with that of me and my late friend Dimgba Igwe. When Dimgba and I interviewed him some time ago about the founding of Access Bank, we found his story so engaging and so inspiring that we had to keep it in our secret literary vault with the hope that very soon, we will turn it into a book—a biography. Ever since, the man has been on our radar and we keep tabs on him. On Monday, he made history with his colleagues with the launch of an innovative financial product that meets the needs of the times of our foreign exchange scarcity era. It is an “over-the-counter futures market” product that will help investors to plan and hedge against the volatility of our sick, bedridden naira against the almighty dollar. And it is backed by the Central Bank. I bring you my abridged version of the remarks of Aig-Imoukhuede at the launch of the new financial market product which is said to be revolutionary:

How Senate Rules are Evolved and Reviewed, By Abu Quassim

The-Nigerian-Senate
The implication…is that no Senator can before or at the first sitting influence the procedure or the rules to be used. The Senators as at that time are inchoate. They are still Senators-elect with no role, influence or power to effect changes or their will on the Senate. That remains the prerogative of the Clerk of the National Assembly or the Clerk of the Senate.
Since the issue of how Senate Standing Orders can be changed has been the subject of both on-going civil and criminal litigations which are now threatening the freedom of the presiding officers and the independence of the institution itself, it is pertinent that one addresses the question: How does the Senate generate its rules and how does it amend them?

Christie, Gingrich being vetted for Trump VP ….. AP

Donald-Trump.jl.061615
Presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump has begun formally vetting prospective vice presidential picks.
The New York billionaire is considering former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, among what he previously described as a short list of possible running mates. Their inclusion was confirmed by people with direct knowledge of the vetting process who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the situation publicly.
Trump begins the vetting process with less than three weeks before the start of the Republican National Convention, when he said he would publicly unveil his pick.
Gingrich and Christie, who both received vetting paperwork in the last 24 hours, emerged as prominent Trump allies in recent months, even as the presumptive nominee faced deep and sustained skepticism from many GOP leaders. Trump’s relationship with other would-be running mates was badly strained in the bruising Republican primary season, leaving him with a small pool of willing and qualified candidates.

The state government said that the law would be implemented in every part of the state.

The governor, while sympathising with the family of a street hawker who was knocked down by an articulated truck while trying to evade arrest from officials of Kick Against Indiscipline  along Maryland Bus stop on Wednesday, regretted that the situation led to the destruction of public assets.

Factional National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff, has warned that the crisis rocking the party may prolong till 2019.
He said there were signs that the courts might not be able to restore sanity to the former ruling party.

The former governor of Borno State spoke at a press conference in Abuja on Friday.
He was represented at the briefing by his deputy, Dr. Cairo Ojugboh, who said the reprieve granted his faction by Justice Okon Abang, that it must be the one to present candidates for the Edo and Ondo states’ elections coming up later in the year was proof that Sheriff was the authentic leader of the party.

Clinton sought secret info on EU bailout plans as son-in-law’s doomed hedge fund gambled on Greece

Hillary
Hedge fund manager Marc Mezvinsky had friends in high places when he bet big on a Greek economic recovery, but even the keen interest of his mother-in-law, then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, wasn’t enough to spare him and his investors from financial tragedy.
In 2012, Mezvinski, the husband of Chelsea Clinton, created a $325 million basket of offshore funds under the Eaglevale Partners banner through a special arrangement with investment bank Goldman Sachs. The funds have lost tens of millions of dollars predicting that bailouts of the Greek banking system would pump up the value of the country’s distressed bonds. One fund, exclusively dedicated to Greek debt, suffered near-total losses.

Clinton’s lead over Trump narrows to 9 points: Reuters/Ipsos …

Hillary
Democratic presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton’s lead over Republican Donald Trump has dipped into the single digits among likely U.S. voters for the first time in nearly two weeks, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll released on Friday.
The June 27-July 1 poll showed a 9.4 percentage point lead for the former secretary of state over the New York businessman, down slightly from an 11.2 point lead in a previous five-day poll that ended on June 28.
Clinton had maintained a double-digit lead in the rolling poll since June 20, as she recovered from a brief boost in Trump’s numbers in the wake of the mass shooting in Orlando, Florida, when he renewed a call for a ban on Muslim immigration.

Americans Will Have To Make Some Hard Choices By Olalekan Waheed ADIGUN

Triump USA
One does not know whether to empathize or sympathize with US citizens at this time. Not that the global recession has hit them harder than any other country. Also, it is not that, like the United Kingdom who voted to leave the European Union (EU), they are “feeling the heat”. We can also not say that the country is in a period of great mourning as a result of the loss of a great statesman. But because, the country has to face the hard-or harder- choice of having to make a choice of who becomes President between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump!

The British Prime Minister, David Cameron, had triggered off the Referendum to give citizens and residents of the United Kingdom, UK, a chance to decide whether they wanted the UK to leave or remain in the EU. By now, most Vanguard readers will be aware that the majority stubbornly ignored sound advice from august bodies and serious individuals – the International Monetary Fund and Barack Obama, for example – and voted to leave the EU. Jeremy Corbyn and Jeremy Corbyn Jeremy Corbyn and Jeremy Corbyn Most of you will also be aware that this decision has had devastating consequences, the most obvious being that the Pound plunged to its lowest level for over 30 years.

Shocked & Disgusted’: UK Police Chief Says Hate Crime Reports Jumped 500% Since Brexit Vote

“Since last Thursday, 331 hate crime incidents have been reported to the national online reporting site True Vision compared to the weekly average of 63 reports,” Sara Thornton, head of the NPCC, wrote, adding that, although “many people are reporting hate crime than ever before,” it remains “significantly under reported.”

Between Cameron and Modu Sheriff By Shaka Momodu

210216F-Modui-Sheriff
I am tempted to take seriously those who postulate, albeit tongue-in-cheek, that the devil is a black man and more precisely, a Nigerian. Indeed, I am persuaded on this by the very evidence of our daily existence: the hypocrisies, contradictions and paradoxes that define our lives; the intellectual and mental laziness, the short-sightedness, the manifest greed as well as our pursuit of immediate gain and self-glorification rather than enduring legacies. And I have often queried our circumstances in the search for answers as to why we are the way we are.

Brexit

cameron
•Now that Britain has left EU, it remains to be seen how the old colonial power holds its own in a fiercely more contentious world
The decision of Great Britain to pull out of the European Union (EU) after months and years of dithering and threats came as a major surprise to analysts and scholars of international relations. It is seen essentially as a setback for the United Kingdom as its isolated economy is unlikely to march the great advances of Europe in a largely globalised world. The referendum that compelled the exit has already claimed its first casualty- Prime Minister David Cameron who has indicated his intention to resign.
It is indeed paradoxical that a country like Britain, a leading western power in the forefront of promoting global integration that has strengthened the north against the south could be caught in this web. It wants an integrated world, but a loose Europe. This is contrary to the position of the other great European countries like Germany, France and Italy.

National day of abuse on my mind By Bolaji Tunji

My disenchantment with the present administration is growing on a daily basis. As a keen observer and follower of happenings in the country, I had this cautious optimism that the country, at the end of the day would be better served with the person of President Mohammadu Buhari at the helms of government. His party has always inundated us with his strict abhorrence to anything corrupt. His ascetic mien also gives the impression of someone averse to worldly acquisitions.

Nigeria out of recession By Bayo Ogunmupe

nigeria-flag
At the moment, the rate of inflation in Nigeria stands at 16 per cent. However, the floating of the naira is a bold move to unshackle the Nigerian economy and position it on the path of recovery from recession. Also, floating the naira has caused the stock market to rebound. This will lead to an influx of foreign investment. The Nigerian economy is as indefinable as Nigerians. Which is why Nigerians remain upbeat and optimistic in the face of grievous hardship.

Cameron: Fantastically un-Nigerian By Louis Odion

cameron
Not too long ago, he ruffled the Nigerian feather following the leaking of his sidetalk in London with the British monarch. Footage captured by an eavesdropping television cameraman had gone viral. Looking a bit tipsy after what many in Abuja would imagine to be one glass too many, Prime Minister David Cameron sensationally declared that citizens of Nigeria, Britain’s biggest former colony on the African continent, “are fantastically corrupt”. But gutted by the outcome of the Brexit referendum last weekend with its apocalyptic consequences for what was once the imperial British empire, this is obviously the darkest hour in Cameron’s political career and perhaps one of those harrowing moments he would wish he never sought tenancy at No 10, Downing Street. Or took the needless gamble to conduct the national poll in which a slim majority voted the United Kingdom out the European Union. Resulting in what is arguably the biggest blow after World War II to the European quest to foster greater unity.

Foreign exchange rate of the naira will now be determined by the invisible hands of demand and supply in a competitive and transparent system.

Here’s a powerful nation that understates it By Tunde Ajibade

nigeria-flag
Every nation should have its set of values. Such gives a sense of direction. It enables each segment in national life to know exactly what the country stands for, and conduct its affairs accordingly. This puts things in their neat places; success can’t be far away from such a nation. It’s because every nation that defines where it wants to go, identifies what it needs to get there, and operates accordingly arrives at its destination. Germany is an example, and the German national football team encapsulates its values best. Compact, focused, disciplined, working as one, it never says it’s over until it’s over. It’s the reason those of us here call the players “German machine”. We clap as we watch the machine, admiring it, holding it with respect. For us, this is where it stops. We admire but overlook the values, the principles that power the German machine. If as Nigerians we’re going to get anywhere as one nation, we need to imbibe the values that guide the nation we admire, we must stand for something.

Buhari, one year on: A citizen’s view By Emmanuel Nwachukwu

president-nigeria-muhammadu-buhari
One year on, the euphoria that greeted the Buhari administration has all but faded.   Hope has been replaced by quiet resignation.  The dire economic situation in the country has affected almost everyone.  The worse hit have been pensioners and millions of workers in the private and public sectors that are owed several months of unpaid salaries, some as much as a year’s salaries.    Projects across the land have stalled and thousands of workers laid off because of non-payment of contractors by both state and federal governments.  Youth unemployment is at its highest ever, fuelling crime and providing ready recruits for insurgents and agitators across the land.  An Abuja resident remarked that people were being kidnapped for a recharge card.   Nigeria indeed is in  recession in all but name.  After years of reckless behaviour and unashamed thievery by previous administrations, the chicken has indeed come home to roost.

President Barack Obama was delivering a speech before a joint session of Congress when a white lawmaker jabbed his right index finger at Obama and called him a liar.
The heckling came during his September 2009 address on health care. Obama was telling lawmakers that his plan wouldn’t cover undocumented immigrants when Republican Rep. Joe Wilson of South Carolina yelled, “You lie!”
Linnyette Richardson-Hall, an African-American event planner, watched Wilson’s outburst on live television in disbelief.
