jimi
As the relationship between the Presidency and the National Assembly remains frosty, veteran journalist and ace public commentator, Jimi Disu takes a swipe at the way government is being run, saying that President Muhammadu Buhari likes to micro-manage Nigeria and not working with modern trends. He also strongly says that the Minister of Youth and Sports be fired for what he describes as his revolutionary-like dressing which he argues sends wrong signals to the youths. “We have been talking about how we can get our youths back into form, yet you have a Minister of Youth who dresses badly and the President tolerates him.” Disu is always passionate about youth matters. Hitting everything that is not nailed and remaining unapologetic, the Producer of the Discourse speaks on Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State and other issues in this interview with Saturday Vanguard in his Surulere office.

Boxing in Nigeria: A life of hard knocks for the poor ……. Al Jazeera

nigeria-flag
Just off the motorway that links the Italian stone mansions of the Nigerian capital’s pricey Minister’s Hill neighbourhood to the settlements of corrugated-tin roof shacks on the outskirts, is a nondescript path. It leads to Dei Dei, one of Abuja’s low-income communities.
The road is dotted with fruit sellers and their piles of mangoes; motorcyclists honking impatiently at giggling girls as they cross the street; mannequins in second-hand underwear; and stray goats, chickens and dogs.
Beside the road is a field scattered with cigarette butts, broken beer bottles and cars. Among them is a grey Toyota Corolla with a steering wheel security lock. It belongs to thirtysomething-year-old Abdulaziz Abdulaziz.
This place is a “criminal’s den”, he says. “So one has to be watchful, especially with cars that can easily be stolen or broken into.”

Fox News Poll: Trump leads in California, Clinton-Sanders in close race ……. Fox

Donald-Trump.jl.061615
Republican Donald Trump holds a big lead in California, in a new Fox News Poll, while Hillary Clinton has a razor-thin edge over Bernie Sanders in the Democratic race.
Trump captures 49 percent of likely Republican primary voters.  That’s more than the combined support for his two remaining competitors:  Ted Cruz receives 22 percent and John Kasich 20 percent.
The mogul leads his rivals by a wide margin among every demographic group, including those he sometimes has trouble capturing:  women, young voters, college graduates, and very conservatives.
Clinton is up by just two points over Sanders among California likely Democratic primary voters (48-46 percent).
A couple things are in Clinton’s favor.  Among the subgroup of those saying they will “definitely” vote, her advantage increases to six points.  Plus, support for Sanders is somewhat softer: 21 percent of his backers say they could change their mind compared to 14 percent of Clinton’s.

Ms Rousseff has repeatedly described the impeachment process as a political coup by her rivals to oust her.
She is accused of manipulating budget figures ahead of her re-election in 2014, but has denied any wrongdoing.
Mercosur has a provision which can be triggered if the elected government of a member state is overthrown.
It could lead to a series of sanctions by the bloc against the country, including trade benefits.

Brits to Obama: ‘Sticking your hooter in’ British politics is unwelcome ……. CNN

obama
Not everyone in Britain, it is safe to say, welcomes the intervention of an American president in what’s viewed as the internal politics of the United Kingdom.
In a visit to London, President Barack Obama has argued in an opinion piece that Britons should vote to stay in the European Union rather than pull out. The UK has scheduled a nationwide vote on the issue for June 23.
And some Britons have reacted to Obama’s advice in what they see as an internal British matter in a way that echoes the words of the American author Ring Lardner: ” ‘Shut up,’ he explained.”

Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump attacked his top Democratic rival Hillary Clinton on Friday, calling her “crooked,” and promised his supporters that he would not bore them by becoming overly presidential.
The comments undercut what his aides had said would be an attempt by the notoriously blunt-speaking Trump to project a more serious image after his win in New York’s nominating contest this week, including by rolling out more policy details.
“I can tell you that if I go too presidential, people are going to be very bored,” the New York real estate baron told Fox News in an interview that will air on Saturday. He added that he worried his supporters would “fall asleep.”
He went on to say that Clinton “is a person who’s got many, many flaws” and that she’s “the worst possible representative a woman can have,” as he shifted his focus away from Republican rivals and toward the Nov. 8 presidential election.

AS CANCER RAVAGES THE LAND… Thisday

Cervical-Cancer-2006
Cancer has for a long time been a major public health issue in Nigeria. Ironically there is no sensible public health policy to combat the ailment. That much was revealed last week by the Senate Committee on Health at a public hearing on the National Centre for Cancer Research and Treatment Bill. Senator Lanre Tejuoso, a medical doctor and chairman, Senate Committee on Health, said cancer was the third most common cause of deaths in the country and currently afflicts about two million Nigerians while between 100,000 and 500,000 new cases are registered annually. “It is confirmed that cancer destroys the well-being of a large percentage of our citizens and it is a public health problem that affects all categories of persons,” he said.
