Anti Gay:Malawi To Consult Public over Law

Malawi is to hold public consultations to assess whether to reform colonial-era laws that ban homosexuality, the government said today, AFP news agency reports.

The southern African nation was the focus of controversy in 2010 when it jailed a gay couple for gross indecency after they held the country's first same-sex public "wedding".

Legislation outlawing sodomy was suspended two years ago to await a government review in a country where many traditional Christian communities view homosexuality as sinful.

Is Obasanjo Right To Call N’Assembly A Den of Robbers? | Punch

He (Obasanjo) is not right. He was so hard on the National Assembly. If he was there for eight years and he didn’t do anything. It is not proper now that he is out of power to be castigating the National Assembly. He should understand that in a presidential system of government, there is separation of power between the executive, the legislature and the judiciary. You don’t say things that don’t have facts and figures.

A Big For Nothing Country!

Nigeria is still reeling from a stranglehold of smothering economic recession. Nigerians are panting for breath under the clubbing, drubbing and slogging of financial difficulties. This Giant of Africa remains an emaciating elephant in the forest of despair and pervasive malaise. There seems to be no realistic, conceivable or visible end in sight to the grotesque and vile picture of the state of our nation.
A few hours ago, former President Olusegun Obasanjo weighed in on the troubling times in a lecture: “…No administration can nor should be comfortable with the excruciating pain of debilitating and crushing economy. Businesses are closing, jobs are being lost and people are suffering. I know that President Buhari has always expressed concern for the plight of the common people but that concern must be translated to workable and result-oriented socio-economic policies and programmes that will turn the economy around at the shortest time possible…” Obasanjo spoke the minds of many home and abroad.

Brexit, Trump: Africa And The Newly Re-Ordered World, By Majeed Dahiru

As the world begins to adjust to a newly re-ordered world, Africans cannot and should not continue to lament over the new realities confronting us. A re-ordered Pan-Africanism is nigh to effectively confront the enormous challenges that may predictably emerge from the current realities.
The world is set to undergo fundamental changes, first with Brexit and second, and most importantly, with a Donald Trump at the White House in quick succession. Throughout the Western world, populism and nationalism is on the rise, evident in these two historic but unexpected events. If the world was set on the edge by Trump’s candidacy, the world is shocked and in some cases devastated by his emergence as the president of the United States, the most powerful nation on planet earth. Between Brexit and Trump’s election is a common thread of nationalism, with the question of immigration at the core.

Epe Ko, Won O Le La, By Pius Adesanmi

Genuine democracies are incompatible with building personal wealth. That is why the White House does not know what to do with about Donald Trump’s billions. It’s a unique situation.
The Americans have been treating Donald Trump’s billions like a curse, a headache. Where will he put his wealth? How will he avoid this and that conflict? How will he do this? How will he do that? It’s almost like his wealth is a liability for their democracy, their presidency.

This Ethnic Group Has A Mind That Works By Tunji Ajibade

Catergorising these guys is a tough task. It’s tough categorising all the actors in the conflicts in the Middle East, anyway. This can happen wherever non-state actors are more than state actors. The Kurds belong to the former, and I pick them first from a host of others. Yet, this description of Kurds doesn’t tell who they are exactly. For instance, Kurds of Iraq are almost state actors, but Kurds of Turkey, Syria, Iran and Armenia are non-state actors. Wherever they’re found, Kurds are a force to reckon with in any matter, including the violent conflicts that ravage the Middle East at the moment. Along with Arabs, Azeris, Persians, Egyptians and Turks, they make up the largest ethnic groups in the region. Kurds are the 12th entity in the series in which I look at the role each actor plays in the ongoing conflicts in the Middle East.

In October, it was reported that a bill to protect people against jungle justice had scaled second reading in the Senate and might soon become a law. Considering that there are already laws against wanton killings in place, such a bill is superfluous. Nigerians practise jungle justice, not for a lack of laws but because our institutions are too tepid to enforce existing ones.
