President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday said he received with sadness and an immense feeling of great national loss the news of the death of the Oba of Benin Kingdom, Omo n’Oba n’Edo Uku Akpolokpolo, Oba Erediauwa.

In a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina, the President on behalf of the Federal Government, extended condolences to Governor Adams Oshiomhole, the people of Benin Kingdom and Edo State on the passage of the monarch who had ruled over his people since his ascension to the throne in 1979.

The President also commiserated with Crown Prince Eheneden Erediauwa and other members of the late Oba’s immediate family.

At Facebook, security is a top priority — security for CEO Mark Zuckerberg, that is.

The social-networking giant spent more than $6.5 million last year on bodyguards and other measures to protect Zuckerberg and his growing family, according to a recent regulatory filing.

The Transition Monitoring Group (TMG) – a coalition of over 400 civic organizations –alleged yesterday that agents of the Jonathan administration offered it a bribe of N2 billion for the purpose of compromising the outcome of the 2015 elections.

The bribe offer came by way of what the TMG chairman, Comrade Ibrahim Zikirullahi, branded a dubious proposal.

”Specifically, some errand boys from the Presidency at the time came to us with a dubious proposal that 50,000 agents of the PDP be fielded as TMG observers,” Zikirullahi said in a statement.

Unpaid salaries: Bayelsa Varsity lecturers proceed on indefinite strike

The lecturers of the Bayelsa State-owned Niger Delta University, Amassoma, have proceeded on an indefinite strike over their four months unpaid salaries.

In the effort to keep the wolf from the door, even as the federating states continue to go broke, there have been inferences that the government may increase the VAT rate. No official confirmation to this effect was ever made by the FIRS, and no VAT Act amendment bill has been presented to the federal lawmakers. However, the Vice-President recently let the genie out of the bottle, meaning that a rate hike may be inevitable.

The primary aim of introducing the VAT was to replace the hitherto ineffective sales tax as a means of generating revenues for government. There was an attempt to increase the rate to 10% on the eve of the departure of the Obasanjo regime in 2007, but the subsequent government refused to ratify the increase due to the absence of any legal instrument supporting the rushed increase (precisely the amendment of the Section 4 of the VAT Act of 1993), and so the rate reverted to status quo.

Money ruins many men. It impairs the moral fibre thus making the average human inhumane but that is because man often fails money. The Nigerian man in particular, fails money and so doing loses his right to lord over it and own it.

Money, like a wild mongrel needs to be tamed. It requires firmness, chariness, deliberate conservatism and modesty of a full man to tame it, own it and control it. But that is hardly the case. Too many men are owned by money. The Nigerian man, woman and society in particular, are owned by money – that is why contemporary Nigeria worships money.

A nation that dreams greatness needs to invest in the strategic inculcation of national values. The success of such a strategic investment depends on several factors: (a) the scope of the values, (b) the source of the values, (c) the nature of the values, (d) role models and instructors, (e) institutional structures. Let us briefly investigate each of these factors.

First, by scope I mean the reach of the values deemed national. It is unavoidably tautological to suggest that national values must be national in scope. But that is the inescapable reality. A national value cannot be ethnic orsectarian. Of course, this doesn’t suggest that a value that is acceptable to one ethnic or sectarian group cannot be acceptable to some other group. What it suggests is simply that for a value to be considered worthy of the adjective “national”, it must be embraced by or considered as worthy of the embrace of others.

The Federal Road Safety Corps has reminded all motorists and other road users to be cautious on the roads as the rainy season has set in.

I’ll come to it one of these days to state which aspects of the trip catch my attention. For the moment, my focus would be what had ailed China when it hosted Nigeria’s leader. China’s attention was divided that time. Or, who can give full attention to guests when his stomach rumbles; I mean when he’s riled by what a neighbour is doing but can’t do a thing about it? Anyway, it was unimaginable that a certain John Kerry would be across the sea in Japan, engaged in anything reeking of the WW2, and China would be silent. Here, I’m fascinated by this one issue that continues to impact the complex relations among nations in Asia – Japan’s role in the WW2.

The Nigeria Labour Congress has said that its proposal to the Federal Government increase the National Minimum Wage from N18,000 Minimum Wage to N56,000 was appropriate in view of the current economic realities especially the high rate of inflation in the country.

The #OccupyNASS campaign group has denied being sponsored to move against the National Assembly, or its embattled chairman, Bukola Saraki, pointing instead to a robust support package from unnamed Nigerians, at an average of N400, 000 daily, throughout its campaign period.

The group on Thursday said it would bring down its tents and leave the main gate of the National Assembly on Friday morning, three days after starting a sit-in there.

Edo Confirms Oba of Benin’s Death | TheCable

The Edo state government has confirmed the death of Omo n’Oba n’Edo Uku Akpolokpolo, the oba of Benin, bringing to rest speculations of his whereabouts since 2015.

The palace authorities had initially denied previous reports of his death but the absence of the monarch at key events continued raising suspicion.

However, Adams Oshiomhole, governor of the state, confirmed the death on Friday, describing it as a “huge loss”.

On Sunday I saw the GTBank advert for their upcoming food fair in the papers and I saw red. I decided to wait a few days before writing to be sure my emotions are reigned in.

I still feel the same way though….
I like GTBank architecture, they encourage professionals in the construction industry. They allow creative expression in the design of their branches. I like their internet banking platform as well. It has greatly reduced the amount of interface I need to have with their mostly impolite and untrained branch staff. So this is nothing personal. What is right is just right and what is wrong is just wrong.

Pray what is the business of a bank organizing a food fair that has already been staged by a Nigerian enterprenuer? If they were sponsoring another entrepreneur it would be fine(competition is good for the consumer), but by themselves? That is how they are now promoting the Autism awareness that they enabled one of their customers to do in the past.
When are Nigerian banks going to understand that their business is to help build the economy by building and encouraging businesses.

Respect Nobel Laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka, has declared that he does not regret his support for President Muhammadu Buhari during the 2015 general elections, adding that Nigeria would not have survived four more years of former President Goodluck Jonathan’s rule.

The University of Ibadan, Ibadan, Oyo State, has been shut indefinitely. This followed a two-day protest by the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), seeking the reinstatement of a rusticated 500 Level student of Petroleum Engineering, Tunji Ekpeti Michael.

Students left their hostels as early as 7am, singing solidarity songs and mobilising their colleagues to shut down vehicular movement within the campus.

They also used the opportunity to protest the lack of power and water among other needs on campus.

‘Occupy National Assembly’ protesters seek Saraki’s exit ……. Nation

A civil society organi-sation, Citizens United for Peace and Stability, yesterday staged a rally at the National Assembly, demanding the “immediate resignation of Senate President Abubakar Bukola Saraki”.

The protesters, who called themselves #OCCUPYNASS, criticised the purchase of 36 exotic Sport Utility Vehicles (SUV) for the senators.

They insisted that the “exorbitant vehicles” must be returned.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has uncovered $12.9billion more arms deals fraud during the administration of ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, it was learnt yesterday.

The development has brought arms funds, which were diverted to other uses, to $15billion as the initial probe covered only $2.1billion.

As part of the ongoing investigation of the arms deals, the EFCC yesterday froze an account with $500million. The owner of the account was not immediately known.

The anti-graft commission has seized houses from a former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Mrs. Diezani Alison-Madueke.
