Boko Haram Suspect Arrested While Withdrawing Money

Boko
The Adamawa state police command on Friday said it arrested a suspected member of the Boko Haram sect.
Othman Mohammed, public relations officer of the command, said the suspect was arrested in Gombi.
Mohammed said the suspect was being investigated by the command.
“He is now being investigated; his name or whether he is on the wanted list will be revealed after the investigation,” the deputy superintendent said.
Meanwhile, a witness in Gombi said the suspect was arrested while trying to make some withdrawal at an automated teller machine (ATM) in Gombi.
“He was arrested by a policeman who challenged him while he was trying to make withdrawal at the First bank,” the witness who identified himself as Buba said.
In a similar development, Othman Abubakar, also a deputy superintendent of police, has confirmed the killing of 18 people by suspected insurgents in Kuda-Kaya village of Madagali local government area.
Abubakar said the insurgents attacked the village around 10 pm on Thursday.

Sex Scandal: Speaker Dogara Challenges America To Prove Allegation Against Nigerian Lawmakers

senate
As the allegation of sexual misconduct against three Nigerian lawmakers by the United States Government continues to draw public fury, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, has asked America to provide fool-proof evidence that the lawmakers indeed committed the crimes.
A lawmaker, Mohammed Gololo (APC-Bauchi State) was accused of grabbing a hotel maid and soliciting sex, while two others, Samuel Ikon (PDP-Akwa Ibom) and Mark Gbillah (APC-Benue State) allegedly requested a car park attendant to help them arrange the services of prostitutes during a visit to Cleveland for the International Visitor Leadership Programme.

Presidency, Aregbesola and the school feeding programme By Olalekan Adetayo

Rauf-Aregbesola
Penultimate Thursday, the Federal Government inaugurated the Federal Government’s National Home Grown School Feeding Programme. At the time of the inauguration, President Muhammadu Buhari was on his second vacation for the year. He was in far away London. Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo presided over the event.
Even if Buhari was around, Osinbajo might still have been delegated to inaugurate the programme. The reason is not far-fetched. Apart from being in charge of the economy, the government’s Social Investment Plan of which the feeding programme is a component, seems to be domiciled in the Vice-President’s office.
The feeding programme is one of the five Social Investment Programmes of the Buhari administration. Rarely will a press statement emanate from the VP’s office without a mention of the investment plan and the N500bn that has been allocated to it in the 2016 Budget. If Osinbajo’s handlers are not announcing foreign organisations partnering government for the programme, they will be telling Nigerians the figure of pupils that will be enjoying “one hot balanced delicious meal” per day nationwide.

Dilemma of a weak leviathan By Segun Ayobolu

nigeria-flag
The idea of a weak Leviathanis obviously an oxymoron. I like the way the biblical book of Job describes the monstrous sea monster known as Leviathan. As Eugene Peterson’s The Message Bible graphically describes Leviathan, “His belly is armor-plated, inexorable – unstoppable as a barge. He roils deep ocean the way you’d boil water, he whips the sea the way you’d whip an egg into batter…There’s nothing on this earth quite like him, not an ounce of fear in that creature!”. It is thus understandable that Thomas Hobbes (1588-1679), the great English political thinker, borrowed the idea of Leviathan to depict the absolute, limitless powers of the sovereign state to maintain order and prevent the degeneration of society to anarchy.

This and that Nigeria Unlimited By Yomi Odunuga

nigeria-flag
When we say there is no dull moment in Nigeria, some people think we needlessly exaggerate happenings here. When an international body rated us as a country with the happiest people on earth some few years ago, those who do not know about us think it was because we soak our sorrows in alcoholic beverages and chew our pain in a cacophony of laughter. However, that is not the full story. There are no dull moments because we have perfected the art of laughing at our folly no matter how bad things have become. Because we have such a high record of self-inflicted tragic moments, we have simply refused to be bogged down by the harvest of pain. Instead, we shrug them off until they become part of our national architecture that, with time, pale into insignificance. Nothing shocks us anymore. We always expect the unexpected to happen without any earth shaking consequences. We giggle at our failures and foibles while we snigger at our successes with minds filled with doubts. Together, we are our own natural disaster. There is always a bigger story behind every story.

The country Trump wants to wall off By Muyiwa Adetiba

Donald-Trump.jl.061615
If Mr Donald Trump has his way and becomes the next American President come November, ‘a big, big wall’ will spring up to divide Mexico and the United States of America. Mexico’s economy is on the rise and is billed to get to the top 10 among the world’s largest economies in about five years. The US economy on the other hand, is on the wane and might even stop being the world’s largest economy by the end of next year.
People like Mr Trump blame Latin America in general and Mexico in particular for much of what is wrong with America today—from unemployment, to values, to lifestyles. Everybody in fact, but their decadent, xenophobic selves. Heck, Trump even blames Nigeria and Nigerians for seizing job opportunities in America and has promised to deport us. Mr Trump is a bully. And like most bullies, he is shallow. It is amazing what you can see through someone’s books if you know where to look as every book takes on some of the personalities of the writer.
I was a fan of his books at the beginning, especially ‘What They Didn’t Teach You At Harvard Business School’. Mr Trump was, and is a good communicator, an asset he has used well during this campaign. But by the time I got to ‘Everything is Negotiable,’ I had seen him pretty much for what he is—a vain, egoistic man who likes to hug the limelight and who likes to look down, and talk down at people. It is true that the Mexican economy is tied to that of the US. Mexico supplies a lot of agricultural products and electronics to the US. It also supplies cheap labour. It also, we should say it, supplies drugs to the decadent and drug crazed in America.

Better universities will trigger organisational learning By Martins Oloja

adamu adamu
As our leaders put on their thinking caps on what to do with the resurgence of insurgents in the Niger Delta region, we have to continue with our light discussion on the need to focus on better universities instead of establishing more that will not produce employable graduates in the public and private sectors. Seriously speaking, I believe that better universities can produce excellent models and modules that can address the Niger Delta conundrum beyond the Umaru Yar’Adua’s meretricious amnesty cookies that have just crumbled.
As I was saying, this is not a seminal paper on the critical role of quality of education in development. But we have been following a simple trend that is showing that there is some nexus between the quality of universities and development of very well known countries. I mean that we have seen that the countries that have had the best universities and research orientation and funding are simply the best (and fastest growing) economies in the world.

Poverty, Nigeria’s albatross By Orji Uzor Kalu

president-nigeria-muhammadu-buhari
have tied the performance of our democracy to the economy because the two complement each other and determine the overall progress of any nation. Poverty has posed one of the fiercest problems facing developing countries of the world. Unfortunately, Nigeria despite its huge oil deposits and natural endowments is still categorised as a developing nation.
Some of the countries grouped with Nigeria in this category include India, Seychelles, Mauritius, Angola, etc. this appellation has haunted Nigeria like a plague. What on earth would make Nigeria remain under this category when it has everything to make it compete at the global theatre? Even India has no reason to be categorised as a developing nation going by the huge success it has recorded in technological advancement and agriculture.

Obama, The Umbrella And Our Leaders’ Arrogance By Isa Ismail Jalingo

obama
Let me first of all be quick to say that, I know two things that may come to many minds while reading this piece; firstly, the choice of the heading, and secondly what is new about the subject matter?
Indeed, there is nothing new about Barack Obama holding an umbrella and certainly our political leaders arrogance in display of power is not new to us, but the point is; when are we going to change?
Sitting in my room with the remote control in my hand, I watch with keen interest on TV, president Obama’s historic visit to Cuba on the 21th march, 2016 to be precise.
Though not new to me, but seeing the most powerful man in the world coming down from a plane, holding an umbrella for his wife Mitchell and walking some fifty (50) meters in the rain to where other dignitaries, including the Cuban president were waiting for him truly strikes me and left me imagining if our leaders in Nigeria do not see this.

Mobilising Capital Market Financing for Nigeria’s Economic Growth By Elizabeth Uwaifo

SEC
Mobilising Capital Market Financing for Nigeria’s Economic Growth, is a subject that fills me with excitement and hope for the future of Nigeria. The capital markets present our leaders with the opportunity to write their names in Nigeria’s history books.
What we want – The capital markets could provide an alternative source of funding for Nigerian corporate enterprises and also for Nigeria’s infrastructure development. We see around us examples of countries that have made a decision to develop their capital markets and transformed their economies as a result. After the 1997-1998 Asian crisis many Asian governments took action to reform their economic policies and deepen their capital markets. The resulting development in their economies has been astronomical.

SEX STARTS FROM THE MIND

Tochi met Matthew in a WhatsApp group. Tochi whose wedding was just 6 months away, lived in Lagos while Matthew lived in Abuja. However, their friendship gained strength in such a short while that you would think they had met or known each other all their lives.

The manner in which they expressed their thoughts during discussions in the group made the other members refer to them as 'boo' and 'bae', albeit jokingly. Not long after, they adopted the nomenclature and addressed each other with them happily.

For a Fresh Start, Begin with Repentance

For a Fresh Start, Begin with Repentance

BOLA ADEOYE — JUNE 18, 2016

“Let us test and examine our ways. Let us turn back to the Lord. Let us lift our hearts and hands to God in heaven and say, ‘We have sinned and rebelled’” (Lamentations 3:40-42a NLT, second edition).

The path to a fresh start and a clear conscience begins with repentance. First, review every area of your life, and then repent of every sin.

What does it mean to repent? It means three things: First, you take responsibility for your sin. Second, you turn away from those things. And third, you turn toward God and his grace.

Clinton’s lead over Trump slips after Florida shooting: Reuters/Ipsos poll

Hillary
Donald Trump chipped away at Hillary Clinton’s lead in the presidential race this week, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll released on Friday, as the candidates clashed over how to respond to the worst mass shooting in modern U.S. history.
The poll, conducted from Monday to Friday, showed Clinton, the presumptive Democratic nominee, with a 10.7 point lead among likely voters over Trump, her likely Republican rival in the November presidential election. That’s down from a lead of 14.3 points for Clinton on Sunday, the day an American-born shooter who declared allegiance to militant group Islamic State killed 49 people at a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida.
Trump seized on the attack to sharpen his security proposals, saying he would block immigration to the United States from any country with a “proven history of terrorism” against America and its allies if elected. The pledge fine-tuned an earlier vow, made after the attacks last year in Paris and California, to ban the entry of all Muslims into the United States.

Man due in court over murder of British lawmaker Jo Cox

cox
A 52-year-old man was due in court on Saturday accused of the murder of British lawmaker Jo Cox in an attack that has brought campaigning for next week’s referendum on European Union membership to a standstill.
Thomas Mair is charged with killing Cox, 41, a member of the leftist opposition Labour Party and supporter of Britain staying in the EU, who was shot and stabbed in the street in her electoral district in northern England on Thursday.
Cox, married with two young children, was preparing to hold a regular session to give advice to her constituents.
A 77-year-old man who intervened to try to protect Cox is in hospital after suffering a serious abdominal injury.
Mair, who lives in the town of Birstall, in Yorkshire, where Cox was killed, will appear at London’s Westminster Magistrates Court charged with murder, causing grievous bodily harm, and possession of a firearm and another offensive weapon.

Rio state government declares financial disaster as Olympics loom

olympics
The acting governor of Rio de Janeiro’s state government declared a state of financial disaster Friday in an effort to change budgetary priorities without disrespecting Brazil’s fiscal laws.
Francisco Dornelles’ move will let him adopt exceptional measures to pay costs related to the upcoming Olympic Games as the state grappes with the country’s steep economic recession.
Dornelles’ office said in a statement that the decision was made because a dip in revenues from taxes and oil royalties was “stopping the state of Rio de Janeiro from honoring its commitment to the organization of the Olympic and Paralympic Games.” He said the state is facing a “public calamity.”

Rights groups silent as Clinton Foundation takes millions from countries that imprison gays …

Hillary
The Clinton Foundation has accepted millions from Middle Eastern and other foreign governments that criminalize homosexuality – but prominent gay rights groups in America have stayed silent on the apparent disconnect between Hillary Clinton’s rhetoric and the donations.
“Unquestionably, they’re not standing up for their principles,” said Human Rights Foundation President Thor Halvorssen.
The presumptive Democratic presidential nominee frequently talks about her support for the LGBT community, while ripping what she describes as discriminatory policies in the U.S.
“It’s outrageous that, in 2015, you can still be fired for being gay,” she told the Human Rights Campaign in an October 2015 speech. “You can still lose your home for being gay. You can even be denied a wedding cake for being gay.”

Trump calls Orlando shooter a ‘son of a b—-‘ …

Donald-Trump.jl.061615
Donald Trump didn’t mince words Friday as he addressed the Orlando terrorist attack, referring to the gunman as a “son of a b—-” and arguing that guns in civilian hands could have mitigated the carnage.
“If we had people, where the bullets were going in the opposite direction, right smack between the eyes of this maniac,” Trump said, gesturing between his eyes. “And this son of a b—- comes out and starts shooting and one of the people in that room happened to have (a gun) and goes boom. You know what, that would have been a beautiful, beautiful sight, folks.”
Trump argued, as he often has in the wake of terrorist attacks and mass shootings, that fewer gun restrictions would have lessened the death toll.
Trump also slammed President Barack Obama for arguing for action to change existing gun laws in the wake of the mass shooting in Orlando.
“President Obama is trying to make terrorism into guns and it’s not guns, folks. It is not guns, folks. It is not guns, this is terrorism,” Trump said.

Forex crisis: Nigerian students abroad apply to home universities

adamu adamu
Many Nigerian students studying abroad have been seeking transfer to Nigerian universities to complete their education at home because of the scarcity of foreign exchange.
Saturday PUNCH gathered that the students were forced to take the decision following the huge exchange rate which many parents could no longer afford.
Some of the students told Saturday PUNCH that they would prefer to return to the country to complete their studies, instead of going through difficulties and long waits for forex that is no longer available to them at the appropriate time.
An Ogun State indigene, Babatunde Agboola, who is studying in the United States, told one of our correspondents that he and some of his friends had agreed to return to Nigeria to complete their studies.
“The message we keep on receiving from home every day is that dollar is scarce and this is affecting our education,” Agboola said.

Civil servants likely to forfeit salary arrears

Kemi-Adeosun
There are strong indications that civil servants are likely to forfeit part of their salary arrears as the financial situations in the states worsen, Saturday PUNCH can report.
Nigeria has been hit by an economic crisis triggered by the drop in the international prices of crude oil and most state governments are currently reeling under heavy wage bill amid drop in federal allocations and poor internally generated revenues.
In the last six months, federal allocations to the 36 states of the federation have dropped from N107.7bn in October 2015 to N89.04bn in March this year.
About 29 states are currently unable to their pay workers’ salaries and this has led to the accumulation of months of salary arrears as allocations to the states continue to dwindle.

A former Chairman of the United States House Intelligence Committee, Pete Hoekstra, has flayed President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration for the way Nigeria is being run.
In an opinion article he wrote on Thursday in the US-based Wall Street Journal, titled, “Buhari is Nigeria problem, not its solution,” Hoekstra accused Buhari-led Federal Government of lacking vision in addressing the country’s dire economic and financial conditions.
His article was a response to Buhari’s article in the same journal on Tuesday titled, “The three changes Nigeria needs.”
The President had written that the country needed to restore trust, rebalance economy and regenerate growth.

Why Jonathan, Okonjo-Iweala Didn’t Win $5m Mo Ibrahim Leadership Prize | PremiumTimes

251014F4-Jonathan-GoodluckFormer President Goodluck Jonathan missed out on the 2015 edition of the Mo Ibrahim prize for leadership despite his historic concession of the 2015 presidential election.
After winning the Martin Luther King human rights award, Jonathan was being tipped for the $5 million leadership prize, which is meant for a “former African Executive Head of State or Government,” who “was democratically elected, served his or her constitutionally mandated term, demonstrating exceptional leadership and left office in the last three years”.
Mo Ibrahim, however, disagrees that Jonathan delivered on this feat, saying “excellence means excellence”.
“There’s an issue about excellent leadership and that’s not an African phenomenon; look at Europe, look at Asia, over nine years couldn’t have picked out five exceptional leaders in Europe, in Asia.”
When asked by BBC if no African leader deserves to win every year, Ibrahim said: “Yes, exactly, it’s not because we are Africans, we have to accept substandard; excellence means excellence.”
