Why I Support Public Grazing Reserves That Responsible Herders Can Rent

by Dr. Peregrino BrimahLong before President Buhari came into
power, many of us have thoroughly discussed and debated on the issue of
grazing reserves as previous administrations considered its institution.
I believe strongly in protected grazing reserves and contiguous wildlife and nomadic and pastural routes across Nigeria. I do not wish for my country to become a concrete jungle. It is healthier for us that we preserve these swathes of public land that can be visited by us, that we can ride our horses via from one end of Nigeria to the other and that cattle herders can rent to graze their cattle.
Forget Their Wealth Let Them Account For Our Own By Dele Sobowale

“Anyone who can’t account for his wealth must be brought to account. Everyone who has served in public office must account for what they own” — Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo, in Lagos, April 23, 2016. If that statement by the VP represents the government’s position on bringing past office holders to account for their misdeeds, it is indeed a welcome development. Many of us were perturbed when the impression was first given that only the Jonathan administration would be probed. And, despite the revelations that have been made about mindless looting of the national treasury since 2010, it is still a fact that the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, embarked on corrupt practices from the first withdrawal ordered by former President Obasanjo in May of 1999. Obasanjo’s administration created the template on which his successors built for corrupt self-enrichment while impoverishing the rest of us. However, the Federal Government is going about this matter the wrong way.
Asking how former public sector office holders acquired their wealth is a tedious approach to solving the problem while at the same time excluding their private sector accomplices.

A Secular Humanist Critique of Religion (3) By Douglas Anele

For most ecclesiastical leaders and theologians, the so-called revealed truths contained in religious scriptures allegedly written under the inspiration of God are unassailable. Indeed, in their reckoning, such “divinely revealed truths” are superior to verifiable information about the objective world generated through scientific investigation. The fundamental problem with religion with respect to truth is that the believer is cocksure that he is right because he has read the truth from a certain holy book and knows, in advance, that nothing will make him change his mind. Therefore, the truth of the holy book is an axiom accepted a priori, not the end product of the process of reasoning or painstaking research. For a devout believer or fundamentalist, the holy scripture is true, and if the evidence appears to contradict it, that evidence must either be ignored, jettisoned or – the option favoured by theologians – “interpreted with the guidance of the Holy Spirit” to the extent that it loses its real meaning or evidential value. In my opinion, the elevation of faith above scientific research is the homage ignorance pays to intellectual laziness and dishonesty.

Thinking Aloud About Ekiti Party Politics – a wake up call for APC By Femi Orebe

As I asked last week on these pages, what is the president or the party doing to assist the APC in states where it is not in government?
The above topic was what trended on ekitipanupo this past week, and with elections coming very soon in both Edo and Ondo states, I expect that an APC, riven down the middle, no matter the pretences, should be able to learn one or two things from our discussion. By the way, ekitipanupo is an Ekiti intellectual roundtable with about 2000 members, home and Diasporan. As is my wont when I use issues on panupo in my articles, contributions, except my own, will not be attributed.

Searching for lasting solution to Nigeria’s economic problems (1) By Ropo Sekoni

Only a few days ago, the Governors Forum met with President Buhari to indicate concerns of its members about the growing failure of states to meet their statutory duties: payment of salaries to workers and of pensions to those who had served the states in their productive years before retiring to tend their bodies and minds in their old age. Two things from the proposal of the association of 36 governors across partisan lines is acknowledgment of the negative impact of collapse of oil price on governors’ capacity to sustain their states. Another thing is the request for increase in allocations from the federation account to states. It was reported that the president also told the governors that the federal government also has problems meeting its own responsibilities but he promised to study the governors’ request and make appropriate recommendations to other branches of government. The acknowledgment by governors of the possibility that their states may atrophy, if no serious intervention beyond periodic bailouts is put in place, must re-ignite the theme of re-federalisation which appears to have been relegated to the backburner since the emergence of the government of change.

Neoliberalism At Home And Abroad In The World: A Postscript By Biodun Jeyifo

As postscript to the series that began three weeks ago in this column, I wish to start this piece with observations and reflections that take neoliberalism on its own terms, in its own ideological self-understanding, especially with the role of our megabanks. Thus, strictly in terms of technocratic efficiency and the benefits that derive from the connection of our national economy to global circuits for the movement of capital funds across the whole world to make businesses and enterprises grow and prosper, the protectionist regulations and practices of the pre-neoliberalism period in Nigeria are uncontestably inferior to the facilities and services offered by the “free trade” financial services of the present period. To put this in a more positive formulation, it does not hurt a developing country like Nigeria to have megabanks that can move capital easily and expeditiously across the whole world; indeed, it makes a crucial area of our national economy keenly competitive both regionally in West Africa and also globally in the centers of the inter-state and international financial services industry.

the adoption of the name by a 10-man sub-committee headed by Anglican
Bishop of Lagos, Rev. Festus Oluwole Segun (1975-1985), the election of a
