Jamaica Wants To Scrap The Queen And Legalise Weed | Metro
Jamaica might legalise weed and get rid of the Queen so let’s all book our flights now.
By ‘get rid of’, to be clear, we mean removing her as the country’s head of state and establishing Jamaica as a republic.
This is because, during the election campaign, the winning Jamaican Labour Party had promised to sever colonial ties with Britain.
Which makes sense in a lot of ways. While we think Her Maj is great, for many Jamaicans she is an unelected relic of the painful colonial era.
The proposal is a ‘major action item’ on the 2016-2017 legislative agenda, put together by the country’s new government.
Instead of having the Queen, they would replace her with a Non-Executive President.
Also in the agenda is a proposal to fully legalise cannabis for ‘specified purposes’ (although we’re not sure which ‘purposes’ these would be).
It’s not set exactly when these debates are happening, but we’re hoping it’s on April 20.
Because then it would be 4/20, sort of… Geddit?
Oh never mind.
