MEF Study: New report shows that mobile banking apps are gaining momentum

A new study has revealed that the mobile banking sector appears to be gaining momentum, media reports confirm. United Bank for Africa (UBA) Plc., Zenith Bank Plc., First Bank of Nigeria Plc., Guarantee Trust Bank Plc., among others all stand to gain from the market.
According to a MEF study of the behaviors and attitudes of 1,000 Nigerian smartphone users who hold bank accounts or own credit cards, almost 68% of respondents are participating in some form of mobile banking.

The study also shows that nearly half (45%) reported using a banking app and 27% do their banking via USSD indicating that the banks’ intensive marketing campaigns are starting to pay off.

Other findings from the study showed that 45% of respondents already buy more than 2GB of Data per month and pay to increase their data bundle mainly to consume more mobile apps (64%) and content such as video (52%) and music (31%).
Though there is a clear appetite for extra data, nearly half of the people polled surveyed (48%) still expect mobile content to be free.
The MEF study goes a long way to show how Nigerians are interacting with their devices and the mobile Internet across various sectors and industries.
Recently, the CBN change the management ofSkye Bank Plc. over concerns on the lenders market situation. Following that move, rumors started to surface that the rest of the banking industry was in trouble, something the apex bank has debunked.
This report should be able to calm some nerves on the situation in the Nigerian banking industry.
