Romans 12:1-2; 13:8-10
OWE NO ONE
Owe no one anything except to love one another, for he who loves another has fulfilled the law. Roman 13:8, NKJV
Our world promotes self and selfishness. People do things because of what they can get for themselves. People use other to achieve their own goals and desires. So there are at kinds of
demands-friends want loyalty; family members demand attention. Bosses demand our time. Subordinates want our support. On the other hand, colleagues often desire a slip-up so they can advance. Competitors hope for some errors to leapfrog us. And sadly, sometimes, even those we care about appear to be undermining our efforts. The result? We often feel like we owe no one anything.
The situations around us kind of give us a sense that we should accept whatever we can get. But the Bible says that we are to act differently from the world. We are called to love in spite of. We are called to show extraordinary affection towards those around us. We are to act with sacrificial love because it is God’s expectation. Dr. M. Scott Peck writes, “Sacrificial love has transforming power. Genuine love is volitional rather than emotional…” The message is, you owe somebody the debt of love, pay it!
