James 3:13-18

WISE MERCY

But the wisdom from above is first pure . . . full of mercy and good fruits... James 3:17, RSV

Today’s passage portrays wisdom in two ways: (i) Earthly wisdom. Verse 15 of the text describes this as unspiritual and devilish because it has its basis on carnal knowledge. It comprises of bitter jealousy, selfish ambitions, false spirituality and the likes that lead to disorder and chaos. It depicts a
situation where true mercy and compassion is lacking. (ii) Heavenly/Godly wisdom. This has its base in the word of God (v. 17). It is pure, that is, t is neither diluted nor polluted by worldly knowledge.

Godly wisdom also has the following characteristics: Peaceable — it always seeks to be at peace with all men and is not involving in any kind of violence; it is gentle - being kind, calm, doing things in a quiet and careful manner; it is open to reason —willing to accept sensible advice; It is full of mercy always ready and willing to forgive those it can rightly do justice to, either to harm or punish; It is full of good fruits - it exhibits righteous and faithful actions that glorify God. Godly wisdom is certain and sincere. Wise mercy cannot be faulted in any way. This is what God is expecting from you.
