Sad!! 22 Trapped Miners Declared Dead And Buried By Ghanaian Government

No fewer than 22 miners, who were trapped in the Prestea-Nsuta mining pit disaster have been declared dead.


On Friday 7 July, the chiefs and traditional leaders, together with families and townsfolk organised a mass burial service for the deceased.

According to reports, the 80-feet pit collapsed on Sunday 2 July, and a rescue team comprising residents of the area has been working fervently to retrieve bodies.

The rescue team came to a halt following torrential rains on Wednesday.

On Thursday 6 July, government ordered the closure of the pit and declared the illegal miners trapped under the earth dead.

The pits have since been covered.

Deputy Lands and Natural Resources Minister, Benito Owusu-Bio, says the district magistrate and medical doctors from the Prestea Hospital have been engaged to complete formalities on the declaration.

He said;

“The family, everyone, have appended their signature to the list [of persons declared dead],”
The Deputy Lands and Natural Resources Minister also said police will be deployed to the area in order to prevent further mining activities.
