Ekiti workers suspend strike, sign MoU with govt

Civil servants in Ekiti State on Friday suspended their 30-day-old strike following the signing of an agreement between labour leaders and the state government.
The meeting agreed to a seven-point resolution which included that no worker and representatives of labour should be punished or victimised as a result of the strike.
On the government side were the Secretary to the Government, Dr. Modupe Alade; the Head of Service, Dr. Gbenga Faseluka and the Chief of Staff, Chief Dipo Anisulowo.
On the side of the labour were the Chairman, Joint Negotiating Council, Oladipo Johnson; the State Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Ade Adesanmi and State Chairman of the Trade Union Congress, Odunayo Adesoye.
According to a copy of the memorandum of understanding made available to journalists in Ado Ekiti, the parties agreed that the state government should, within seven days, conclude its request with commercial banks to restructure personal loans granted public servants with a view to giving them relief from loan repayment.

The MoU read, “Government is committed to the payment of two months salaries but to pay January 2016 salary immediately after the suspension of the strike and subsequently make provisions for payment of the February 2016 salary as soon as the Budget Support Fund is available.
“Government should continue to honour its obligations to the public servants as a matter of priority.
“The Joint Committee should continue to meet to sort out other issues which were agitated for by the Labour Unions including release of the report of April 2015 Staff Verification exercise; personnel issues including promotions and inter cadre transfer.
“JAAC should make arrangements for the payment of September 2014 salary of primary School Teachers and Leave Bonus of Local Government employees.
“The Technical Committee on Remunerations and Fiscal Measures in the Public Service (stakeholders meeting) should look at the feasibility of making available a sum of N10m monthly to gradually defray outstanding gratuities.
“The technical committee on remunerations and fiscal measures in the public service should make a monthly provision of fund for capacity building of servants.
“The state government has keyed into the Budget Suppprt Fund of the Federal Government which opens a window of assistance to all states having difficulties paying their workers.
All the labour leaders neither picked their calls nor responded to a text message from our correspondent to confirm or deny the development on Friday.
Speaking on the development, the HoS expressed appreciation for the understanding shown by the labour leaders and the commitment of Governor Ayodele Fayose to ensure industrial harmony in the state.
