Psalm 72:1-7

BUILD A JUST AND RIGHTEOUS COMMUNITY

“Endow the king with your justice, O God, the royal son with your righteousness.” Psalm 72:1, NIV

An unjust and unrighteous community is not a place to be inhabited by believers; if a believer finds him/herself in such a community, then it becomes his/her responsibility to intercede for righteousness and justice and act to enthrone same.

All the qualities that are included in today’s passage are what we are praying for currently in our nation: God’s justice, His righteousness, prosperity, protection for the afflicted and help for the needy. Any earthly “king” (leader in any capacity) who possesses these qualities can instill same among his people too.

The human “king” is a reflection and extension of the divine king. His divinely appointed rule over God’s people includes his obligation to judge them. So he has a particular responsibility to the vulnerable in the society, just as God has a special concern and love for the poor.

Blessed is, therefore, that home society, community or nation that is endowed with and righteous “king.” For Nigeria to have a healthy, just and righteous home we all must contribute to it. As a leader, are your followers rejoicing or groaning under your leadership (Proverbs 29:2)? Ponder on this.

Birthday Blessing: “I the Lord have called thee in righteousness, and will hold thine hand, and will keep thee, and give thee for a covenant of the people, for a light of the Gentiles” (Isaiah 42:6).
