The Federal High Court presided by Justice Binta Nyako has suspended the secret trial of IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu and co-defendants till further notice following a prima facie suit filed by the defendants against the Nigerian government challenging the veracity of the charges leveled against them, which is currently being entertained by the court.
Barrister Ifeanyi Ejiofor, the lead counsel of the defendants after his introduction, told the court that the accusations leveled on his clients lack merit and basic proof. According to Hon Ejiofor, “Nnamdi Kanu(the first defendant) is only exercising his right to self determination.” He also noted that that the defendants started their agitations even before the emergence of Muhammadu Buhari as the president of Nigeria; hence do not pose any the threat to the incumbent Buhari’s government.
Kanu and his co-defendants are standing trial on charges of treasonable felony. The arrival of the IPOB leader was greeted with cheers among scores of Biafra supporters who trooped around the court premises early this morning in solidarity with their leader.
