Pay My Dowry Or I Leave

A wife, Mrs. Felicia Akinshola, 34, on Thursday urged a court in Nasarawa State to dissolve her marriage over alleged inability of her husband to pay her dowry.

NAN reports that Felicia, who is a businesswoman, told the Upper Area Court in Mararaba, to dissolve the union because her husband “is irresponsible.’’

She told the court that she had been living with him for more than six years and that the marriage was blessed with three children yet the man could not pay her bride price.

According to her, he is also a business man but has failed in his duty as a husband and father.

“Akin has not paid my dowry in accordance with Yoruba tradition and every effort put across to enable him to pay has proved abortive.

“When I fell sick, he did not show any concern. All these have made me lose confidence in him,” Felicia stated.

She told the court that she was no longer willing to remain in the marriage, pleading that she should be granted the custody of the children.

The respondent, however, denied all the allegations, asking for time to enable his family and his wife’s family to meet and discuss the issue.

The judge, Mr. Ibrahim Shekarau, adjourned the case till March 9 for hearing and consideration of settlement.
