British Woman, 26, Becomes One Of World’s Youngest Airline Captains

A British woman has become one of the world’s youngest commercial airline captains at the age of 26. Kate McWilliams, from Carlisle, said she is asked about her age by cabin crew and passengers almost daily and most people are “pleasantly surprised and impressed” when she tells them.
McWilliams began flying in the air cadets aged 13 before going on a training programme at CTC Aviation in Southampton on her 19th birthday then joining easyJet as a first officer in May 2011. She recently rose to the rank of captain after passing the airline’s command course. Condemnation Greets Purchase Of Bulletproof Cars For Govs, Wives | Punch

Apart from corruption that has crippled Nigeria’s economy, another cankerworm that is devouring our nation’s treasury is the extravagant lifestyles of public office holders. The public officers do not show restraint in the usage of public resources as far as their pleasure and that of their families is in concerned. They are schooled in the art and science of ensuring maximum enjoyment of office to the detriment of the majority of the citizens. Their ostentatious lifestyles defy logic and commonsense.

APC Crisis: Tinubu Accuses Party Of ‘Injustice’, Rejects ‘National Leader’ Title ….. PremiumTimes

A former Governor of Lagos State, Bola Tinubu, has accused the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, of perpetrating “injustice”, saying he would rather not hold the honorary title of “national leader” in such a party.
“I would rather not have any title yet reside in a party that honours democracy than hold a title in a party that says it honours me but that treats justice with indecency,” Mr. Tinubu said in an explosivestatement on Sunday, in which he chronicled the alleged political sins of the party’s national chairman, John Oyegun.
Mr. Tinubu had been accorded the position following the critical role he played in the emergence of the APC as a major challenger to the then-ruling Peoples Democratic Party’s decades-long hold on power.

People In The Church Are Going Through Pains Every Day, Says CAN president

Samson Ayokunle, a reverend and president of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), wants the federal government to “buckle up” in addressing the nation’s economic crisis.
According to Ayokunle, the pains of the people are so widespread that people in the church are not excluded.
Ayokunle was speaking on Saturday at a thanksgiving service organised by CAN to honour him and Joseph Otubu, vice-president of the association, at the national christian centre, Abuja.
He called on the leadership of the country to face the challenges with optimism, and urged Nigerians to embrace hard work as a way of meeting the demands of the nation’s current economic condition.

Demolishing History in Lagos, By Kọ́lá Túbọ̀sún

The attack on Lagos Island is unfolding as a terrorist act. Not in the commonly accepted sense of the word, with a foreign religion as motivation, but none the less malicious either. The symbolism isn’t lost that the demolition took place on 9/11, a day now globally recognised for its significance in the fight against global terrorism after two buildings were destroyed in New York in an attack against a country and culture.
I spent a few hours on Thursday, September 22nd talking to officials of LASPPPA and LASBCA, two agencies within the Lagos State government in charge of managing and supervising the building or demolition of buildings/structures across the State. The day before that, I spent some time again at the Ground Zero on Lagos Island where the Ọláìya Family House (Ilọjọ Bar/Casa di Fernandez) used to be. The green sign erected on a preceding Sunday by the State Government warning off intruders had been taken off the property, stolen overnight by unknown persons. All that is left on it now are crumbs of stone and dirt. Other than that, the space remains as it was on Sunday. Busier, this time, as traders had set up their wares and went about their day.

Tribute To Patience And Nigeria’s Other First Ladies…., By Azu Ishiekwene

Why did Patience do it? Why is she taking on the EFCC, even threatening to sue the agency over a matter that she was not a party to in court? I can only think of suicidal courage as her motivation, a gift, which appears to be at odds with her husband’s meekness.
It’s not nice to speak badly of first ladies. Not nice at all. Not because they will send you to jail or castrate you as a few of them could some time ago, but I guess there’s a quiet social taboo that just restrains us from throwing the kitchen sink at the mothers of the nation.

DMO has exposed the lies of Edo Government — Ize-Iyamu

PDP candidate, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, yesterday said he has been vindicated on his claim about the high debt profile of the state by the Debt Management Office, DMO. In that respect, the candidate has tasked the outgoing governor to explain the N1.9 trillion allegedly received in the last 8 years.
A statement by the Ize-Iyamu Campaign Organisation also stated that the debt management office’s (DMO) release as reported by many national dailies, had settled Governor Oshiomhole’s claims that he never took foreign loans.

Economy On Its Knees As Recession Bites By Emmanuel Nwachukwu

It is hard to find anyone in Nigeria today that is not affected one way or another by the worsening state of the economy. The goodwill that ushered this government to power has all but evaporated. In my recent VISITto Nigeria, I overheard a conversation between two roadside hawkers on the rising cost of living in the country and when one mentioned the word “change”, the other retorted angrily, “Holy ghost fire kill that change”!
Nigerians have become beggars because of the lack of work and non-payment of salaries. Even those that are lucky to receive their salaries regularly have seen their pay slashed by as much as 50 per cent. Our hospitals have become mere consulting centres where patients go to die because of the lack of basic medical equipment. With inflation spiralling out of control, because of the rising cost of inputs, business

Recession: Senators Oppose Saraki On Sale Of Assets, Demand TSA Review, True Federalism …. PremiumTimes

Senators on Thursday opposed their President, Bukola Saraki, kicking against the call for the sale of some national asset.
Mr. Saraki had yesterday joined the call by some Nigerian elite for the federal government to sell some assets to raise funds to help the country out of recession.
Many of the senators, who contributed as the debate on the recession in the country continued in the upper chamber, blamed the elite, including some lawmakers, for the economic problems of the nation.

Galaxy Note 7: Samsung Confirms Exploding Phones Reported In China | Independent

Samsung confirmed on Wednesday that it had received three reports of Galaxy Note 7 battery fires in China and investigated two of them.
Samsung and its battery supplier, Amperex Technology, investigated and found the cause of the fires in those two cases was an external heat source, not the phones’ lithium-ion batteries.
Samsung spokeswoman Jee Hae-ryoung said by phone that the company was unable to study the reported third Note 7 fire because the consumer refused to hand in the phone.

Should FG Sell National Oil Assets? | Punch

I am not in support of the call for the sale of the nation’s oil assets. I don’t see any wisdom in selling the assets because of recession. That would amount to a desperate move to weather the storm.
What are we going to use the money for if the assets are sold? It would be spent to fund recurrent expenditure.
If we must sell the assets, it must be in line with the existing privatisation policy of the country. The Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas Limited is one of the assets those who are canvassing the sale listed. And that is the most viable oil asset we have.

How Nigeria Police Torture Detainees, Rob Them – Amnesty International

A Nigerian police unit set up to combat violent crime has instead been systematically torturing detainees in its custody as a means of extracting confessions and lucrative bribes, Amnesty International said in a report published on September 21.
In Nigeria: You have signed your death warrant, former detainees told Amnesty International. They said they had been subjected to horrific torture methods, including hanging, starvation, beatings, shootings and mock executions, at the hands of corrupt officers from the feared Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).

Crucifying Buhari: Foul Play Or Fair Game (2) By Fola Ojo

If adherents of the President and backers of this administration are in search of men who will always concur and stand in agreement with all their steps and missteps in government; if they are in a frantic dig for those who will always say “yes” to things sometimes they ought to voice “no” against; if they are dredging for applauding docile minds and scouring for saluting submissive souls, there are many Nigerians, including this writer, who don’t belong in that league.

#RestructureNigeriaNow: Ndokwa land and the Tragedy of Nigeria’s Federalism, By Tony Osborg

Nigeria is not working and will never work in the way that it is presently configured. The unitary system that we practice is evil and takes everybody backward. It does not just underdevelop us but also generates tension and crises. The earlier we restructure Nigeria and entrench true federalism, the better.
The Ndokwa nationality is supposed to be one the richest ethnic groups in Nigeria by virtue of their natural wealth. They have abundant natural resources beneath their soil. Yet, they have become one of the poorest due to the skewed nature of Nigeria’s unitary system that exploits the minorities and their resources and leaves them impoverished.
